| Supplements? Do you guys give your babies supplements? I saw the supplement/medication area at the pet store and got overwhelmed!! I don't know what's necessary/good to have/shouldn't have unless needed. Thanks for your input!! I'm so thankful for this site, I'd be so confused and even more nervous about my baby coming if it wasn't for all the helpful answers I've received It's only made me more excited!! |

| If your dog is eating a commercial dog food, you do not need to give it supplements. If you are home cooking, that's another story.

Anyway, after two weeks of twice daily she gained 2 ounces (but that could be from anything, more hair??/the time of day??) - still feel her hip bones so will continue it for a bit more.

| It really depends on what you're feeding. If you're using a very high quality food with plenty of vitamins and minerals (which the good ones will have) and rotating protien sources (such as with each bag in the brand, getting a different flavor), it's not necessary unless there's something specific you need to address with your dog. Check the vitamin and mineral contents on the ingredient list of the food you're using and if your vet is proficiant in nutrition (most aren't unfortunatly) go over it with him/her. I also look for a food that has an extensive list of ingredients beyond the protien such as fruits, vegetables and minerals. If you do decide to use one, get one that is a "whole food suppliment". I'll post a link at the bottom for one that the vet I worked for who was very much into nutrition sold and recommended (mainly only for dogs or cats that had to be on a prescription diet temporarily, for his own dogs because he did home made raw and anyone who had an extra need). The only suppliments I use are for my Beagle - she's hypothyroid and on an rx for it and 12 years old, so I give her their whole food suppliment for senior dogs (it has glucosamine and omega 3). I also use their regular adult one for my Akita in the winter months since her skin gets dry under all that fur so she needs the extra omega 3 fish oil and it works wonderfully. www.missinglinkproducts.com/ Missing Link is great, but there are plenty of other good ones on the market. It can be overwhelming though lol so figured I recommend one for you This one I know is available at Petco. congrats on your new furbaby, it's so hard to wait isn't it?

| No need if the food that you are feeding is AAFCO certified for the lifestage of your pup. Unless there is something in particular that you are trying to accomplish with a supplement, there is no reason to give anything. Supplementing an already balanced dog food too much can even throw off the balance. All foods that are AAFCO certified have enough vitamins and minerals added to them. Were you looking to get something in particular?

I agree but just a side note re: AAFCO that I learned a few years ago (maybe you already know this)- their standards for dog and cat food is actually rather low. They require a food to be balanced enough to "sustain life as a sole source of norishment" (maybe I shouldn't technically quote there lol, but it's something like that). ONLY mentioning this for the sake of anyone researching and just a little FYI I thought I'd share since I found it interesting

| Oh that's good to know!! Where can I find out about this AAFCO? And the other day I bought Merrick's Puppy Plate, or something like that The ingredients looked great and had the most protein I could find (28% I believe). Another quick question, are there brands that have different flavored puppy foods? It seems most brands only have one for puppies, then different for adults. Or is it okay to feed only one as a puppy, then change it up as an adult? Thank you all so much for your help!! |

I hate that about puppy food too, but there are some brands that actually don't even have a specific "puppy formula", they just have what's called "all life stages" food and those usually come in a wide variety of "flavors". You can stick with the one puppy food though, (I actually have a bag of that Merrick food here and the label says there's chicken, turkey and duck in it and I'm sure it goes above and beyond the AAFCO standards so there'd be no need to suppliment it)
