| Help Storm Gain some Weight... Good Evening YT, I'm looking for some help for Storm so that he can at least put on 1 lb. Storm currently weighs 2lbs but he just looks super skinny, It has never been a major issue until we started taking him to Preppy Pets (Doggie Daycare) and he always slide through the front gate and they are afraid to put him in the play area with the other smaller dog duet to his size. The other Yorkies there are much larger than storm... A little History He has been to the Vet: No issues Age: Will be 1, Jul. 29th His Parents are: Mom-4lbs and Dad- 6lbs Current Food: Blue Buffalo for Puppy and every other day I mix it with Blue Buffalo wet puppy food (which he picks through and spits the kibble out). He is very spoiled and likes to lay on my lap majority of the time but he does get play time at home. All suggestions are welcome. I will try to get some pictures w/out clothes posted once he wakes up. |

| How much kibble does he get per day? When was his last fecal and deworming? What heartworm drug is he on? Any bloodwork ever done? My concern would be why a puppy is skinny. And if it's just because he is undereating, is there a reason why he is doing that or is he like a lot of other Yorkies who are picky eaters...

| Good morning Ellie May, We free feed Storm and I do it mainly because of his weight. The one thing that I do notice is he eats only a little during the day but at night he does wake up and finish the bowl of food which is a little over a half a cup. I also decided not to try and have him on a schedule and don't mind him eating at night because when we leave his days will be nights and nights days. The Vet put him on Heartguard and told me to give him half because of his size, same with his flea prevention (comforties). He was dewormed again (2nd time) about 2 months ago because I thought I seen worms in his stool, the Vet checked but the sample was negative and she still treated him just in case. His last bloodwork was done during his neuter and teeth extraction at the age of 6 months and everything then was also fine. Do you think I should have blood work done again. |

Hi, I'm trying to put weight on Alice too (she's only 6 months old though so it's a little different than you're Storm). I'm not too sure what to tell you to be honest other than maybe trying to get him to eat more than he is. My vet told me to give her a little more canned food, but too much and she gets loose stools, so I'll be interested to see what other advise you get The only thing on a side note I wanted to mention to you quick - with the Heartguard - if you're only doing half a month (which IS good for how small he is) don't just break it in half since the actual Ivermectin isn't distributed equaly throughout the "treat". You have to mash the whole thing up and kind of mix it then give him half of that (you can store the other half in a zip-lock baggie). When I worked as a vet tech we were told this by our Merial rep (co. that makes it). So, just in case you weren't doing that already just wanted to let you know .

| Alice, Thanks for the information on the Heartguard because I was just cutting it in half then cutting the half into smaller pieces to add to his food since he will not take it any other way. Storm is not big on treats other than cheese and hot dogs. |

| Oh you're welcome I figured you probably didn't know since most people don't. Since that info came right from Merial's rep. figured I'd pass it on I don't think they normal tell vets that because they want you to use the whole thing each month but the vet I worked for was a stickler for stuff like that. When he told the rep. he was telling the clients with tiny dogs to give half, she spilled the beans LOL and told us they needed do it that way because the medicine is injected into the already formed treat.

| IMO, there is no way a 2lb dog eating a half cup of kibble a day should look really skinny, but maybe that's just me. All you can do is add calories (any reason you can't mix it with canned)? But I personally would want to know just why. My first thought in a pup is that the worms weren't cleared, but that probably isn't the case, esp. since Heartgard Plus controls rounds and hooks. I would hope nobody takes what I say over what a vet says, but I would not split any heartworm drug.

| I would not split heartworm either. I couldn't get my dogs to eat a whole heartguard, so I use interceptor, it is just a small pill and they happily eat the whole thing. The easiest way I have found to put weight on is with more calorie dense food- when I was trying to put weight on Armani I couldn't feed enough kibble. I started adding canned food or homemade stew (shredded chicken, carrots, and sweet potatoes mixed with homemade chicken broth).

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | We went with a higher fat protein food for our little Annie to help add weight. (Everyone else is on NB Sweet Potatoe and Fish.....but we add NB Venison for about Annie.)
