| Retained Baby Canines and Bad Reactor to Vaccines My Sweet Dee had a horrible reaction to the Lyme Disease Vaccine in October of last year, with a really swollen face. It was a delayed reaction (after the benadryl shot had worn off), about 5 hours after the vaccine was given. Friday we dropped her off at the vet and they gave her 3 vaccines without us knowing it--and (surprise) she had another delayed reaction. Obviously we are done with this vet who couldn't figure out he needed to read her chart carefully. Here's my next question: Should we still do a dental for her? She has retained canines that the vets keep telling us we need to have removed, and we understand why. But because of her bad reactions to the vaccines, I'm really hesitant to have her under anesthesia, even though she did fine with it during her spay. Her Canines are right next to each other, don't overlap but do tend to gather gunk. But if it only takes me having to brush her teeth every day instead of risking the anesthesia, I'll do it. |

| How old is she? What did she (presumably) react to the second time? Vaccine sensitivities don't really relate to anesthetic sensitivities. However, if she reacted to more than one type of vaccine, then I'd be concerned about drugs in general. Did she have preop blood work? I'd personally go ahead and do a bile acids test to see how her liver is functioning. Reduce function could cause problems with drugs. If all is well (and it probably is), then I'd go ahead with the dental.

| JUSt wanted to add , that vaccines and the drugs used to sedate for surgery are in NO way related. But you should have the blood work done for safety. ANd yes, it is definatly best to get those teeth out. They can get infected and cause alot more problems. And if your littel girl did fine during her spay, most likely she will do just fine under anesthesia a 2nd time. And it will definatly be in her best interest. But i do think you should find a new vet if the one you went to gave the vaccine a second time. They obviously didnt read her chart over!!! SCARY. |
