| Luna to be spayed, very very soon!! HELP! Sorry for my "all of the sudden postings" but I had to make two in order to seperate the two topics and not get topics confused. I've been meaning to ask around her about spaying. The vet called us a day or two ago to remind us that it's time to consider spaying Luna. I have a few questions and would appreciate if anyone can give me their opinions. 1- The vet uses gas mask, I believe that's what it's called, then a tracheal tube to facilitate air for breathing during the surgery. Is that method ok for yorkie's of Luna's size...4lbs? I am very afraid of the tracheal tube since collapsed tracheas are common in yorkies. 2- Approximately how long is the recovery? I want to be able to plan it with time that way I can be here with Luna. I have spring break in mid March, so I was thinking of having her spayed on a friday then having the weekend and the spring break week to be with her. 3- Cost and insurances?! My vet tellls me that the total for the surgery would be around $240. She also wants to have a stool sample and blood work done on Luna before the surgery, which isn't included in the $240. I was wondering if anyone here uses a pet insurance to cover surgeries like spaying and how much do you pay? Or if there's a website I can visit for information that would be great! 4- Finally, anything I should expect that way I won't be afraid if something doesn't seem normal. Thanks you all, once again.

| Yoda had dental work done and he was fixed at the same time, which was around $280. But he had eight teeth pulled, which is the main cost of that. Just the fixing part would be $80. Perhaps you might want to shop around a bit? And just ask what local vets charge, just to get an idea if that $240 is normal for your area or not. |

| Good idea... It may also be the area I live in, I'm from Miami...I've heard that it's expensive here as oppose to places like Illinois where my breeder breeds, because of cost reasons.

| It seems that 200-250 is the average price for spaying in Miami. As per the health insurance, my friend has VIP Insurance, it covers 80% of the spaying costs if i am not mistaken...u have to pay in full and they will reemburse you, i think it comes out about 10-20 dollars a month... Ohh, and please please do blood work, i have seen a case that a schnauzer had a problem in her blood (her blood wouldn;t coagulate {sp??}) So just to be on the safe side, i highly recomend that!! |

| Babbie: Thanks so much for your reply. Of course I will do the blood work and stool sample, I am a strong believer in "it's better to be safe than sorry"...I may sign up for VIP then, although I think it's VPI? Not sure, I have to check online. The vet also sent me a pamphlet through the mail regarding that same insurance. Thanks again! I really need more details on what to expect upon Luna's recovery, it's my first dog, and I really am unaware as to how to go about caring for her throughout her recovery.

| Ohh...you're totally right...it is VPI (veterinary pet insurance) Mojo's recovery was super fast, i do know tho that for females it is a little more complicated...but i think it will be great if you get her spayed on spring break so you can be with her all times... |

| Tilly was spayed almost 2 weeks ago. She is 4lbs 13 oz. The vet I took her to let me bring her home that afternoon. She was drugged up so the rest of the night she was groggy. The next day she was 100% herself and was quite mad that she had to stay in her playpen all day (vet said not to let her jump on and off furniture and she loves chasing the cats so I just kept her in there.) I got the bloodwork and her teeth cleaned and had baby teeth pulled. I paid about $230. Oh and she was intubated (sp) too and came out fine. |

| Yeah, I am so worried about the tracheal tube and gas mask. I'm so afraid... that is what I'm most nervous about. I really hope Luna doesn't come in heat within 2 weeks, since my spring break is in 2 weeks. Are there any signs that can warn me if she's going to come into heat soon? I know dogs aren't like women in the sense that some PMS more than others when that time comes around, but perhaps dogs show some sign of it... thanks for the help!

| Noelle was spayed with no problems :) I too was very concerned about getting Noelle spayed....but we did it ! Noelle went in last Thursday morning at 8:30AM and by 1:30PM the vet called me to tell me that she did just fine and was waking up from the anesthesia...she was intubated with no problems. I had the pre-op bloodwork done too. I picked her up at 5PM and she was a little groggy but very happy to see me. He gave her a shot of Rimadyl for the pain and gave me some pills of the same to take home for her. I paid $213.00. I only had to give her a half of the Rimadyl pill the following day more as a "just in case" she was in pain. I didn't want her to be uncomfortable. Then the following night around 2 AM she was really grouchy with the cat so I gave her a 1/2 baby aspirin and she went back to sleep with no problem. I stayed home Thursday and Friday to take care of her and by the weekend she was chasing the cat again. Now, a week later she's totally recuperated....back to her happy self. Don't be afraid to ask your vet tons of questions, that's what they're there for......Good luck !!! |

| Also be sure to ask your vet to use Isoflurane for the anesthesia during the surgery. It is more expensive so they might charge you for that too, however it is the best especially for small breed dogs. This is the only one my vet uses now. It ends up not being absorbed by the blood, but works its way out through the lungs so dogs wake up sooner after it is stopped and recover from it much better. Also, you can ask to have the vet do the intubation instead of the vet tech. They might think you are paranoid, but I think better safe than sorry. Finally, Tini recovered quickly. The first night she was really out of it and wouldn't even come out of her crate for a couple of hours. Then she just wanted me to hold her. The second day she was still a little bit slow and not wanting to play, but on the third day I was having to make sure she didn't jump up and get too hyper. That was the hard part. I know how hard it is to go through this process, I was a wreck. Be sure to get a vet that you trust and have a good relationship with.....it makes it so much easier!
