| Tartar/Plaque starting to build up... Hi, Been noticing that Kenzie´s back teeth have a bit of tartar on them, even though we´ve been brushing 2-3 times per week using CET enzymatic toothpaste and toothbrush. Is there a way to get rid of it without having to put her under anestesia just for that tiny bit of tartar/plaque? She just turned one 2 weeks ago, and the doctor says shes still very young to go through a full dental procedure. A friend, whos also a vet student, told me about CET Aquadent rinse, have you tried that one? Please help me, since i dont want Kenzie to lose her teeth cause of that, and also, dont know if it has to do something with the fact that she doesnt chew her kibble like 85% of the times and she can be a fast eater too. Thanks!

| The CET water additive contains xylitol which is toxic to pups. It's probably a very small amount, but I wouldn't be comfortable with it. They do have another rinse though that would be fine. Two to three times per weeks is not enough to prevent tartar. Once to twice daily for best results.. If she is old enough to be spayed, she is old enough for her teeth to be cleaned. She may not need it though. A very small amount of tartar with a healthy looking mouth does not necessarily require a tend. The vet should asess whether one is needed. Is she retaining any baby teeth?

| I would increase your brushing and oral home care if she is starting to build up, every day if you can.

| Petzlife is great. I'm really bad at brushing Jackson's teeth (it's only about once a week right now) but the Petzlife helps a ton! I use the gel (but they also have a spray) and you just rub it on their gums/teeth. I think to get rid of tarter, you use once or twice daily for 2 weeks and then you just use it for maintenance so once or twice a week. I need to start doing it every day because Jackson is a little over 2yrs old and his canine teeth are getting some tarter build-up that I want to get rid of!

| petzlife - with the spray are you just spraying in their mouths? Do you have to rub on the gums? Which would you choose - the spray or gel for an almost 14 week old. Thanks.

| Well, Jackson flipped out over the spray! He did not like it at all. I've never seen him spaz out so much, I couldn't even get the thing near his mouth. And he doesn't spaz over a lot of things, lol. So I returned it for the gel and he tolerates that a lot better. You just put a bit on your finger and rub it around.

| I use biotene for dogs they have three options I use all of them for my dog Cooper who has horrible teeth, that stems from an eye problem. You can get at the vet or order online a water additive and 2 forms of gel one is to start the other to maintain. I also had a sealer put on his teeth that worked for a while but now we do the sealer once a week at home, called orAvet also a gel that I apply with the applicators it comes with. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I like the Petzlife too, and I have both the gel and the spray and prefer the spray, although most people like the gel. I just give a quick spray on each side of the mouth; the gel just seems harder to get it on the teeth. They are selling Petzlife at Petsmart now. We also use Bully sticks and Petzlife is said to soften tartar, while I believe Bully sticks help scrape the teeth clean, much like scaling; it seems to be working. Joey's 4 now and dentist said his teeth are still great!

| Thanks for the replies! Do you know if theres a site where Id order the products from? I need a site that ships worldwide please. Also, been brushing daily and shes letting me do it, but her gum bled a little bit, nothing scary, but I think its cause of the plaque shes got there, and it seems to be coming off (yay)

| My pups have build up. Brushing didn't work well for us. Vet said to use gauze pads and wrap around my finger. She said it works better than a brush. When we were in her office last week she did it and WOW did it remove a lot of gunk. Just got the pads to try starting tomorrow.

But im curious about the way healthy no build up teeth must look like. Do they have to be 100% pearly white, or do they have like a yellow/beige rim maybe? Just to know when to stop when brushing since i get a bit obsessed about it lol.

Healthy teeth with no build up look white. Yellow/beighe rims mean buildup and should be professionally cleaned by a veterinarian. Regarding bleeding gums - as with us, the best way to deal with bleeding gums is to keep brushing and stimulating the gums, that's how they heal. Also make sure the toothbrush is not too hard. I use a baby soft on my dogs.

| Jack had the same issue and I refused to put him under. Thankfully I found a small family owned pet supply store that offers teeth cleaning. He has a dental hygienist clean his teeth once a month and all she uses is a pick and a tooth brush but it does wonders! I also brush his teeth about twice a week (not as often as I should). Here is the website if you are interested Canine Care - Home. I think this website is for California residents only but you may want to see if they offer anything of this sort in your area.
