Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Tallulah has colitis - suggestions? Tallulah has been having problems with diarrhea intermittently the past couple of months. The first time we went to her vet and there were critters in her stool. Dr. Diagnosed colitis. Treated it with antibiotic and probiotics, and we did the rice with chicken diet, transitioning to dog food very slowly. She responded to the bland diet and medicine immediately, but started with the diarrhea again last week. T's doctor is in the hospital so I took her to the vet our friends at Yorkie Camp use. His diagnosis was pretty much identical as was the recommended dietary plan. Another fecal exam came back negative, so she has been on rice cooked in a little plain chicken broth and cottage cheese for five days. Plus Immodium AD twice daily as long as her stools were runny. Yesterday I was supposed to start slowly transitioning back to dog food if her stool was back to normal but it's not. She isn't going at all during the day but she is getting up every hour or two at night and the stool is very runny. In every other way she seems perfectly normal. Her appetite is good, in fact she eats the frequent tiny meals the dr recommended and wants more ( which she doesn't get). Her energy level hasn't flagged - she's still the tiny tornado. And she has gained weight as expected even with the problem. Dr. Wondered if she was eating something she shouldn't but there has been no opportunity for her to have anything I didn't give her. I'm waiting to hear back from her doctor now. Wondering if anyone has suggestions about dealing with colitis. |

| Did the vet recommend cottage cheese? If not, I'd use something else. A lot of dogs don't tolerate dairy well. Sounds like it's time to do some more testing. Is this a pup? Talked about a Rx diet for GI issues? What antibiotic was used? Metronidazole tried? Giardia ruled out? Blood work done (probably time if it hasn't been)?

| Have you tried supplementing oatmeal for the rice. My pup has IBD and she gets oatmeal with just about every feeding. To make a long story short, it contains fruto-oligosaccharides. This is a fiber which feeds the flora of the large intestine and helps to maintain a homeostatic environment, while adding consistency and bulk to the feces. I mix plain cooked Irish oatmeal in with her raw and it has been a huge help in keeping her GI tract healthy. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Any critters were ruled out by the fecal exam. I had doubts about the cottage cheese, too, and Dr. agreed that I should stop it and go to rice with chicken - that has worked well for her before. He had me stop the Immodium and put her on diphenoxylate. If she hasn't settled down in a day or two, he will do blood work and maybe an x-ray. But for now he still thinks it's a food issue. T had a really good night - no diarrhea at all. We'll see what the next couple of days have in store. I will ask Dr. about oatmeal next time we talk. |

| So sorry T isn't doing well. Hope you get it figured out and she gets back on track soon. Zhoie couldn't do dairy as a pup, made her throw up. We stopped and have never tried it since. Not sure how she would be now at 2yrs

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | T had a good day. Stool is getting a little firmer. I can't believe I have people who I can talk to about dog poop! In all other ways she continues to be my little Yorkshire Terrorist. Her nickname at Yorkie Camp is "tornado" and they tell me she is still the most energetic dog ( I think that's politically correct for driving them crazy) in the gang. So here's hoping she continues to improve and we can control this with a careful diet. |
