| no more prednisone Latte has been on prednisone for her allergies for quite a while. It makes her puffy and snarky and I want to get her off! She's scratching and licking quite a lot, so I switched her food to Nutro with all the skinand coat goodies in it. Does anyone else know of a holistic treatment for allergies? I think the predisone made her more hungry and thirsty and that explains getting up at 2 a.m. to go potty. (?) Thanks!! |

| I also have this problem and have switched my girls over to Nature's Variety Prairie(Raw) and have seen some success but it really is to soon to tell (I have only been using this for about 2 weeks). One thing I did stumble upon is what I was washing my tile floors with was causing alot of the problems. I was using Pine Sol (I know I am spelling this wrong but to lazy to go to the kitchen) and it was really causing a problem. I have now switched to Ivory soap and it really completely stopped in the itching in one of my girs. Hope this helps. Cindy & The Gang |

| good thought I also have not had her on the new food very long. I am going to stick it out. (I did give her a quarter tab of P last week, but maybe I'll just toss it, so I'm not tempted.) A gal at Petco said she bathes her dog in Dove shampoo with conditioner and that helped her. I have some of the shampoo, but I need to get the 2 in 1 kind. She does seem a little perkier without the prednisone! (p.s. you spelled Pine Sol right. I don't use it, but I wonder if the laundry detergent is a problem for her? |

| We just discovered our male has allergies. He chewed a spot on his back. They shaved the area so we could spray this medicine on it and gave him antibiotics. He is still licking there and so they are putting an e collar on him when we spray the medicine on and at night. I hope he doesnt have to take predesone or steriods. Its not getting any better though.

| I tried the Nutro but it had grains in it so it really didn't work for me. I am also against using any kind of meds if I can correct the problems with the right kind of foods, cleaning products etc. Trust me, I have gone through many kinds of foods so now I am at the top of the food chain but I hope I have solved my problems. Plus long term use of these meds is not healthy for the dogs. You might want to go to this website and read about feeding raw. I can pick up the medallions at a feed and grain store here in Tucson but you can order over the internet. Now my little ones did not like their kibble so I am using Innova grain free for that. Also they recommend not to feed them kibble and raw at the same time. So in the morning they get their medallion (raw which they love) and at night kibble (which is so so to them). http://www.naturesvariety.com/ I don't think I would use the Dove on them but I do use Coathandlers shampoo and conditioner. Some members use C&C but I have never tried it. You can do a google search on both of these brands. You will not find any of my suggestions in Petsmart or Petco but I have spent my fair share of $$$ in these stores until I realized they did not offer what I wanted for my gang after alot of reading and asking the experts. I think if you go through alot of the food threads on YT and pay attention to members that have been on this board along time they will give you some of the best advise. Good Luck Cindy & The Gang |

| I myself was on Prednisone for over two years and have only been off for four months. It is no fun for Latte either. I have a Bassett with the same problem and they wanted to put her on the steroid. She was only four at the time and prednisone causes liver and kidney damage(humans and dogs) The longer they are on it, the more problems. My doc said to just use Benadryl. You can give them 1mg per lb.(if you haven't already tried that) My Gizmo got into fire ants and I used the Benadryl on him. Works great. Puppy will get sleepy at first so play hard before giving to them.

| Try to avoid Prednizone at all costs! My mother was on it for 5 years for polymyalgia (it's the treatment of choice for that, but the disease is supposed to self-limit in 2 years and didn't). Anyway, she went from having the bone density of a 30 year old to having 7 fractures -- including both femus, the strongest bones in the body - in less than 2 years. We almost lost her to complications. Her new doctor has her off steroids, walking, doing water aerobics, and looking great (she lost the 70 lbs she'd put on due to the drug). Prednizone is a miracle drug for short term (like a week or a month) use, but beyond that it's TOO dangerous. Previous doctors swore Prednizone could not damage her bones. It was only after we moved and she got new doctors who did not know the prescribing doctor that we were told the truth. Don't fool yourself -- they stick together. Years ago we had a dog on Prednizone for allergies and I'm convinced it shortened his life. He was old at age 5 and died in his sleep at age 7. |
