| Question About Spaying Small Yorkie My Yorkie is 7 1/2 months old and is very tiny. We had no idea she would be so small. We have another Yorkie that is a little over 7 pounds, but for some reason little Sophie has just stayed so tiny. Our vet told us he didn't want to spay her until she is well over 2 pounds which I am totally fine with because I worry about her and there is no worry about her breeding because we have a fenced yard (and actually go out with her when she goes outside) and our other Yorkie is also female. Anyway, on her last check-up, she was finally 2 pounds 3 ounces and he says we can go ahead and schedule her spay, but I wanted to see if anybody else had their puppy spayed so tiny and if they did well. I guess I am just a little nervous about her going through the surgery. She seems healthy with the exception of some skin allergies which have resolved with a grain-free diet. Any advice is appreciated. |

| My Teddi is only 3 lbs so I'm sure she wasn't much over 2 when she was spayed. I got her fixed when she was about 5 months. I also had to get teeth pulled so put her under again when she was about 10 months. Then when she was 1 year she had liver shunt surgery and had to be put under once again. I would suggest you wait until she is about 1 year because if all her teeth don't fall out then you can do it all at the same time and not have to put her under again. By the time they are 1 year old if their baby teeth don't fall out they aren't coming out. Teddi had a few doubles.

As long as you find a vet experienced with small dogs, it shouldn't be an issue. My Chloe was spayed and had a liver biopsy at the same time and she came through just fine.

| I had a tiny Chihuahua that wasn't spayed till she was 10 years old. As long as you know there is no chance at all that she could possibly get pregnant, I'd wait till she was at least a year old.

| I Absolutely agree with the majority here....Please don't spay her before she's at least a year old. She's growing and needs her hormones....There isn't any possibilities about her getting pregnant so no need to rush in fixing her. My Tulip is 2 and we're only NOW thinking about spaying her...if we do at all....we have NO males around..she's around NO males...so we're still considering it...but she was only 3 lbs at a year...and now she's 4 lbs. so I do feel a lot more comfortable about having her surgery now that she weighs more!

| Thank you so much for all the responses. I agree with the majority too that we will wait until after she is a year to do her surgery. For some reason, her vet is pushing us now to do it, but I think it is because she is so small and he is afraid of her breeding, but there is no way that would happen. She does have a double row of teeth on the top where her baby teeth have not fallen out yet, so she will have to have them pulled at the same time as her surgery. I am more hopeful now from some of the responses that she may grow more too. Have a wonderful day |

| We also waited until Lucy was about a year old. BAT testing had turned up some mild liver issues and even the Vet wanted to wait after that. A second BAT test showed only VERY MILD issues and the Vet was ready. But I wasn't . . quite! We waited until she was almost a year old and as close to 4 lbs as she was going to get. We were going to move and I wanted a trusted Vet to to do the procedure. I went through the anesthesia protocol with him and he answered all the questions correctly! She did fine and also had a few retained baby teeth removed as well. I have a male dog, Ringo, but he had been neutered so I wasn't worried about any 'oopsie pregnancy". I'm glad it's over and done though.

| Our baby is almost 2 years old and weighs 2.9 lbs. We had the same exact situation- we had to wait until she was 7 months old which put her at 2.3 lbs, so we got her spayed then. I was SO scared and cried when we dropped her off but she did AMAZING. She woke up fine after surgery and came home with us that night. I know exactly how you feel; it is very scary, but the vet would not push it if he did not feel comfortable. A big reason he may be pushing it is that the earlier it gets done, the risk of cancer drops tremendously. I did a ton of research on spaying such small dogs and you can find some scary stuff on the internet but don't listen to it! The surgery will only take a few hours and then it will be done and you never have to worry about it again! Our teeny tiny babies are stronger than they look! Hope this helps ease your mind a little bit because I was in the same exact situation and my girl hasn't slowed down since that day! |

| I just had my little girl spayed as well as some dental work on Thursday and she has done wonderfully! She is just over 3 lbs and is 8 months old. She has bounced back to her old self in just 3 days. Happy as ever. Just ensure you really trust your vet and can ask as many questions as you need. The last vet I had almost killed her scheduled for a previous spay appointment a few weeks before. They didn't even bother to do blood work and wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount of money to take her baby teeth. I found a new vet and his rates are super reasonable.n It is a small business and they have been in business for many years and have a great reputation. Trust your gut, get referrals if at all possible. Good luck!! Quote:

| Thanks for the advice. Since I posted, Sophie got a little red place on top of her head and got some redness on her back and we took her in on Thursday and he diagnosed her with Demonex. Then she had an allergic reaction to the medication they put her on all her hair on the top of her hair started falling off. They had to shave her little head yesterday! He said we need to get this under control and go ahead and spay her in the next couple of weeks because the hormones can actually make it worse. Now I am concerned about the medications and anesthesia and having an allergic reaction to that, but if it makes her better, I want to do what is best. Another thing that concerns me is that they want to keep her overnight but there is nobody that stays with them overnight, so I am going to push/demand to bring her home that night. I like my vet and feel I can trust him, but I am so nervous about it. Anyhow, it looks she will be getting spayed in the next couple of weeks. |

| Make sure bloodwork is done to ensure that everything is ok to go ahead with putting her under. VERY IMPORTANT!!!
