| Food Strike - Mom going crazy!!! Ok... I have two adorable puppies - Ike and Lola. Ike is 1 and 1/2 and Lola just turned 1 year old last week. I am having trouble with their diet since late December. I used to feed them Welgness. However, they start not wanting to eat it. I tried a few different things - wet the food, mix some soft food, but nothing really helped. I decided to try Nutro and they liked it at first. However, after 2 or 3 days they start to give me a hard time to eat - I have to sit by their side and sometimes even feed them.... I am sure nothing is wrong with them. They drink lots of water, play normally, and love treats.... trust me... Helllllpppppp, please....

| Go back to the Wellness (Google Nutro - lots of dogs who have gotten sick and even died after eating it). How long are they going without eating if you just put the food out and leave it or just put it down a couple times a day? How long do you go before hand feeding? Very few dogs will actually starve themselves. It can be harder with Yorkies because their blood sugar can drop pretty easily, but most adults can do fine without eating for awhile. Problem is, if you keep changing foods when they decide they don't like one (doing this once in awhile is fine, they should like their food, but it can go too far), or you hand feed and give so much attention when they decide not to eat, then they are leading you which in some peoples' opinions is not a good thing.

| I don't know much about Nutro....only that it's a 3/4 star food out of 5 stars... I had similiar problems with my babies when they were little...very picky. I finally was able to get free samples of premium foods from our Feed and Grain stores...and some specialty pet shops also give free samples...you might start there...see if there is any that she's interested in.. My girls like Canadai, Evo, and now they are on Natural balance..I"ve also recently tried The Great life..which they did like too. Some have suggested sprinkling parmesan cheese on the dry food..to get them to eat it..I tried it..but it didn't work for my picky eaters...so I just kept trying to find a food they liked. Good luck...it can be frustrating trying to make a finicky eater happy! Here's a rating guide to help you choose quality food: Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings

| Could it be that they are just not hungry? They are getting older, metabolisms slows down and they don't need to eat as much? Duke was a SUPER picky eater. The only thing I've found that he actually gets excited to eat is raw. Maybe try that? Lots of proteins to mix, so they don't get bored. |

| Oh, I can identify. My Lucy is the pickiest eater ever and always has been - since the day I started weaning her off Purina PUppy Chow! Sometimes I just wish I'd left her on it. I've fedher by hand; throw kibbles out one by one (she likes to chase and eat them); you name it all to get her to eat. I do believe I've created a bit of a monster! Anyhoo, she is now eating Blue Buffalo Limited Ingredient (a low to moderate protein level). She does like it sprinkled with Parmesian Cheese; chicken broth; cottage cheese (somtimes); cooked carrots; a bit of scrambled egg; green beans; and I also mix in Wellness 99% canned meat ~ usually chicken or turkey. She now turns up her nose at Salmon. Good Luck and they have us wrapped around their little paw!

| My Leila is a picky eater as well. She prefers "human" food, particularly chicken. At the vet's the other day for an issue, I asked about getting her back onto kibble since I'd tried everything. He told me about a "ground up liver powder" that you shake on their food, told me it worked for his picky eater. I haven't checked around here, but googled it and found a website to order a sample. Will give it a try. Might be worth looking into He also told me not to worry, dogs will not starve themselves...good luck! |

| Very interesting. My little dogs Yorkie, Shorkie and Shih Tzu are also very picky eaters. They perfer people food also. Mostly chicken. I might try the ground up liver also. My dogs also eat Chef Michael dry food but very little of it. They also told me that a dog will not starve themselvs but Oliver is only 12 weeks old and I worry about him. |
