| Plain Yogurt or Probiotics For those of you that use probiotics (or yogurt), which one do you think is better? Of course I realize that the yogurt has to be plain, no sugar added, especially artificial sugar, and no additives...If you use yogurt, how much do you give a day? Like a teaspoon? What about pro-biotics (liquid)...Like a 1/4 teaspoon? Thanks for any info... maggie |

| There was a thread on this subject recently and a couple people wrote that yogurt does not have sufficient probiotics, so they give a powder or liquid supplement. I'll try to find the thread for you. I give my boys Fage plain 2% yogurt, barely 1 teaspoon, 2 x per day. Max has been eating this same amount from the time he was a 3 pound pup.

| As long as the yogurt is all natural, it doesn't matter what brand you choose. I'm happy to hear Apple is doing well.

YT 2000 Club Member | I tried yogurt for awhile with my guys to help with Tuckers stomach issues and hopefully help some with the red eye staining they always have (was told it was some kind of yeast) and it didnt work... SO I have started them on a powder enzyme made through petgaurd that has probiotics etc in it. Im hoping it will help. I also have decided to try and switch them to Natures Varitey's prairie lamb based foods, the ingriendents are awesome and they even include apple cider vinegar and probiotics so hoepfully this will work!

I am trying to get Rosie off I/D also. I switched to Instinct kibble that has probiotics in it. I am know using the can food also in place of the I/D. So far so good. I think she is doing fine. I was feeding can i/d and I found out the first ingredient was water. Where the first ingredient in the Instinct can food is chicken.

They did blood work and never said officially what it was to me. She was vomiting and diarrhea. Blood in the stool. They gave her antibiotics and a shot to stop the nausea. After that she was fine. They did change her food to the i/d. I was okay with that until I found out how awful Science Diet is. She was sick over a year ago and we haven't had any trouble since then. So, I thought it would be okay to try something better. She really likes the Instinct and I am keeping my fingers crossed that we continue to have good luck with it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If Apple needs the probio for a 'therapy' and not as a snack, then I'd go w/ a supplement for sure. The concentration of probio in yogurt isn't much, and yogurt only contains 1 or 2 species at the most. Whereas, if you get one formulated for dogs - a good supp will include the species specific to a dog's GI. Keep in mind...the stomach of a dog is extremely acidic...and there is a lot of thought out there that many probios die after hitting the stomach (never making it to the small intestine, where they're needed). Some probios try to use some sort of a 'delivery system' to try and protect the probios so that they are able to reach the sm intestine.

| Use caution when giving a probotic as a supplement. Some probotics contain phosphate/phosphorus which can cause kidney problems. A recent visit to the vet indicated a rise in BUN and creatine levels in my dog. The only thing new added to his diet was the probiotic supplement. We swore by it until the vet visit. I'm not saying that they're not good to add as supplement, just use with caution. Since taking Mocha off the probiotic his kidney levels appear to have returned to normal functioning. |
