Help, can't find it I've searched every thread & can't find it. Please help. A YT'er suggested instead of using "prednisone" use ????? and that's what I can't find. Only remember it started with a P. Need to know as the vet prescibed prednisone for my foster yorkie and I don't want to give it to her. Think it's for skin problems/itch. Plan on checking w/vet to make sure this is why he wants her to have the prednisone. She's on meloxicam once a day for 4 days then she's to start the prednisone on the fifth day. Hoping someone can help me find this thread. Thanks

Thanks for all your help Beamer, but, that wasn't it. I just got a foster yorkie last week. The Humane Society has their own vet, which is understandable. He had prescribed the prednisone after 5 days of taking meloxicam. It was for dry itchy skin & ringworm. She wasn't itching much & ringworm wasn't bad. Took her to my vet & he didn't think she needed such drastic measure. If Shiloh (her name) had big open sores then he would recommend it. Prednisone messes w/liver, kidney & immune system. Told me to feed her "good" food, use a good conditioning shampoo, and use tanatan antifungal cream. Said to keep the prednisone on hand. Had my vet agreed w/giving her the prednisone, I wanted to be able to suggest an alternative. The ringworm sores are dried up, but vet said it'll take couple months for them to go away. I understand that ringworm is in the dirt and anyone can get it. Also treating her for ear infection (yeast). She was being fed Science Diet dog food (loaded w/corn). Shiloh is chewing her paws some, I'm sure, due to the corn. I'm switching her over to Wellness, but that's a long process. Just can't wait to get her off that cow feed. I'm using Tropiclean oatmeal shampoo & conditioner as recommeded by my groomer. Can't find the Tanatan Cream. Wondering if the secretary at the vet's misspelled the name. Have you ever heard of it? I'll call the vet tomarrow AM. Thanks again.

I believe the med you are looking for is called Tinactin and is sold in most grocery stores . Most commonly used for jock itch but also works for ringworm.

Also you can do a Chamomile tea rinse for her itchy skin. I steep 3 or 4 bags then pour into a clean gallon milk jug & fill with warm water. After her bath just pour the rinse over her whole body, don't worry about getting in eyes or mouth as it's not toxic & works well for allergy eyes too. After you pour the rinse over her do not rinse off, just dry as usual.

I hadn't replied to the thread I was looking for. So that wouldn't work. I've stopped looking as the prednisone is out of the picture for now. Thank goodness. Called vet this am & your right, it was tinactin, not tanatan. Not even close. I wrote down the Chamomile Tea Rinse instructions. Just gave Shiloh a bath Tues. pm. Want to wait at least a few more days before bathing her again. I'll use the tea rinse then. Thanks so very much for all the help from everyone.

one of the best natural remedies for ringworm or other mind skin problems is TeaTree oil. The only problem is I think it smells gross but it works, it's a natural antiseptic. My 5 year old son had a tiny spot of ringworm on his arm and straight teatree oil twice a day it was 100% gone in 3 days. It's also a good ingredient in some natural dog ear cleaners.

But that would only be if they injested it right? It's an ingredient in the natural ear cleaner I use for my Yorkie and Beagle and there hasn't been a problem. I never heard of it being toxic if applied topically but I guess it could be differnt for small dogs? Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it before I use the ear cleaner again. | Tea tree oil is toxic... in formulations it should be 5% in solution or less and specifically made for pets. It can be absorbed through their skin and paw pads.... not just when ingested... To the OP: Prednisolone is easier on the liver and is often prescribed instead of prednisone for Yorkies.

Just update on Shiloh. She's doing good. Dry skin is sooo much better. Ear infection & ring worm is cleared up. Her eyes are so much brighter. Still waiting for her hair to grow out. Can't believe the humane society's groomer shaved her down to the skin. From top of her head down to her tail. Left her side hair long. Also working on putting a little weight on her. But all that will take time. She is so cute. One ear up & one ear down. Best little girl. Thanks again for all the ideas & help. I've made notes on the good suggestions.
