| I need advice ...so here I am to consult the real experts :):) My dear little girl, was hospitalized last week for 4 days with what the vet initially thought was liver shunt after some blood work came back. In the end she was diagnosed with pancreatitis which baffles me somewhat as she is on a very healthy diet....from day one. My vet of 20 years had a heart attack and the new vet at the time of emergency, well....lets just say I am not so pleased with her. She said "lets just put her on a low fat high nutrition dog food and see how she makes out". That is just not good enough for me, as I've read each flare up, can "kill " part of the pancreas. This weekend I made food and she has shown tremendous improvement...fortunately she has eaten fresh fruit and veggies since she came to me... I made chicken stew with boneless skinless chicken and rice and another with lean, drained ground sirloin. I also should add, that I don't want her to drop any weight. Is there anyone here who has had a dog with pancreatitis and can offer suggestions? Maybe she would do better on homemade food. thank you Y People .... Abbie |

| Yes, I have a dog with pancreatitis who has had two life threatening acute attacks. My advice is to listen to your vet's advice and don't take matters into your own hands. Low fat is only one issue in pancreatitis. It is unknown what foods can trigger pancreatitis.....they do know high fat can be an issue, but that is not the only issue with pancreatitis. Also, Pancreatitis can smolder for a very long time. I would do nothing but a bland diet for at least 6 months while the pancreas heals. Also, pancreatitis gets worse with each attack. So it is important to avoid another attack if you can. Our dog was 5 when he had his first attack and 9.5 when he had his second. The second was worse and his blood work almost 1 year later has still not returned to perfect and he was very sick for months. Good luck.

| I'm sorry your baby was sick and in the hospital. Happy to hear she is home. For home cooking, I would work closely with a canine nutritionist, especially now that your girl has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. My knowledge is very limited, but feeding any kind of beef concerns me.

| thank you for such good advice...I just got off the phone with the vet... when the breeder told me about sophie, then she was 8 months... she told me that she was having a terrible time getting her to eat..and she was very small. She never has been awake much during daytime....she is just over two now. anyhoo...I tend to ramble sorry ......the change in sophie last night and today is very encouraging. The vet thinks I should continue to keep her on a home diet, and she is emailing me various recipes. Today she has been awake for a better part of the day, and so much more alert I agree with following advice from a vet....however let me say, owners and breeders of yorkies sometimes can make all the difference.
