| Allergy/system detox question If a dog has a food allergy and you change their diet how long does it take for their system to 'detox' from the source of the allergy? Does that happen right away once the source is removed or does it take time to get all of it out of their system? |

| It will definitely take time to eliminate the allergen from within the body, and to cease the reaction. Especially if the reaction is dealing with itching, or skin sensitivities, as this is a self-perpetuating issue. It produces what they call the "itch-scratch" cycle. Hang in there, |

My Tucker has issues with certian ingredients in foods that I have yet to pin point, I know he is allergic to corn and possibly chicken. Anyways, If I start feeding him a new food (which has happend often) and he starts itching by overnight, I know that he cant have it and I put him on a different one, generally the itching stops within a day or 2. I know with humans that it can take sometimes weeks for the body to detox, being a parent to a son who is allergic to just about everything and seeing a allergist this is what I was told. Im sure someone else can probably give you a more definite answer..

| Thank you. We've done allergy tests and got her results last week so we do know what she is sensitive to...actually, it was less than I expected. She had a high positive to fish, milk and rice in the food allergy section...anything else was a low positive in the other areas and there were only a few like Oak, hickory and dust. Surprisingly, she had no reaction to corn, wheat, chicken, beef and some of the other more common allergy sources. So, the food I was feeding was fish based and also contained cheese...go figure! Don't get me wrong, it's a good premium food...it just doesn't work for Megan. I've started home cooking and she is a different dog! All of the itching and licking has stopped...she will let you sit and massage, scratch and play with her ears now where she would pull away before...no more anal gland issues or 'fishy' smell (thank goodness!) and her eyes now look shiney and bright where before they were dull. She is more loving and active...she was always a loving dog but it's different now...it's hard to explain...she comes to you in a happy way and wants to snuggle, not in a sad way like she wants to be babied. Does that make sense? I'm going to back track and read labels of all of the foods I've fed her over her short 3 years and see if it coincides with where all of her issues started. However, I think I know exactly where it will start to show as I've kept a record of what her issues were and when they started. I feel confident we are on the right track...and...I've already apologized to Megan for getting it wrong all this time...she forgave me! |

| Yes, it was done by a blood test that was sent to a lab in NY. It took about 10 days to get the results and then we had an appointment with the vet to discuss the results. I was really surprised that she wasn't allergic to more...I guess I was expecting the worst! |

| It can take around 12 weeks after eliminating an ingredient to find out if it was teh problem. If it's a GI issue, then some improvement should be seen within 3 weeks.

| This is 1 1/2 weeks into home cooking and she is doing great...her 'issues' stopped almost overnight once I took her off of the commercial food. She's a happy girl again! |

| We have one more 'issue' that we want to see go away so we're watching for that and hopefully it will disappear too. I just feel so bad that all this time I thought I was doing everything right and it was all wrong |

| Food can be a tricky thing. We do our best. I see so much on the internet about food that is just very questionable. I used to follow that route, but thankfully stopped.

| Yah, and too much knowledge can be a bad thing too so now I have a food that is working with her and I'll stick with it. I'm using a home made diet and the Honest Kitchen to supplement. The girls like it but it doesn't settle too well with Peanut just yet. I will continue to search for a commercial (dry) food that has none of the ingredients Megan is sensitive too though...for convenience and when we travel simply because I don't think the HK is going to work long term for them. I have read the ingredients in the foods I've fed in the past and they all contain some kind of rice and fish or fish oil so that explains her issues hanging on for so long. I promised her I will do better in the future |
