| How to express the anal glands ???? I was told that someone was nice enough to post ,How to express a dogs anal glands. My little Julie has a terrible time with her glands. The vet does it and the groomer did it about 3 days ago.But she is have a hard time with them again. The last time I took her to the vet ,she said that I needed to learn how to do them myself. Well that's great, But she maybe needed to show me how. I do not want to make things worse for Julie by doing something wrong. If some one can send me the link or tell me where it is posted I would appreciate that very much.

| Anal glands I have had some experience with this. Years ago I had a small poodle that had problems, I did the glands myself, but felt I didn't do it correctly because it was a never ending chore. It seemed I had to do it every couple months, which only shows I wasn't doing it right. After she was gone, I got my first yorkie. She also had the problem, but I only had the vet take care of her because I felt he could express them better. He forgot to do it one time when she had her teeth cleaned, and she ended up with these horrible open sores on her hind end. That only confirmed that it was better that he did it. Every year thereafter, he did them after her teeth cleaning and I never had a problem again.:aimeeyo |

| Expressing an anal glad isn't something that can really be "taught" over the internet. Please have your vet or groomer show you how to do it properly. Teresa |

| It sounds like your vet has given you the go ahead to just learn however you can. They coulda offered to show you though. They are located at about 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock just below the anal opening. They are hard to miss. Externally: Put your thumb on one and your index on the other. Hold a paper towel back there and squeeze. If you feel something in there and nothing comes out, they could be impacted and the vet would need to take a look. Internally: Insert a gloved, lubricated (KY Jelly) finger into the anus. Grab on between your thumb (on the outside) and index finger (on the inside). Squeeze and repeat for the other one. If your finger is in the way of the gland opening, you could block the liquid from coming out. So you may have to reposition while in there. The demos online do a good job IMO. It isn't easy to cause damage. For some dogs, if you never start it, then they will never need it. They are glands, so they want to be filled. They can fill very quickly.

I use frozen, no salt added peas. Heat them in the microwave and cool with cold water.

| How old is your dog? If your dog isn't old then you need to change the diet or find out what is physically wrong that is causing this problem. Anal glands filling up is normal. Each time the dog goes #2, they will be expressed. Beware groomers who tell you they are expressing the anal glands. A healthy dog, with a good diet, will not get compacted glands. Having them expressed when not needed causes them to not function properly, then, you will always need to do it. Your dog will let you know if it is needed. They will scoot across the floor, often. Sometimes the dog just needs to scratch an itch. They will also lick and chew at their backside. If your pet doesn't display these signs, don't try to fix them. They are easy to express, if full. Best done during bath time, due to smell. Hold tail up with left hand. Place thumb and index finger on either side of the anus, then go down about half an inch, directly below the anus. Gently squeeze inward and upward at the same time. The gland feels like a small ball under the skin. As you push in and up, fluid will squirt out the anus. Do this a couple times then wash the fur well. I have been a groomer for close to 20 years now and have never lost a dog to anal expressing. You will do just fine. |
