Donating YT 500 Club Member | 1 year old Vet Visit So Taycie will be turning a 1 in March! How fast time flies! And I know we will have an annual vet visit. I am looking online for a guildline or checklist something that will give me a list of what I need to be prepared for when the time comes.. Will I need to worry about shots? Or just the one year rabies?.. I know she won't need rabies for 3 years after this.. I am doing a stool sample, and I am thinking of doing a blood panel as well. She did have blood work done in July of 2010 so is this too soon? I have read about a bile acids test. What is this exactly?

Vaccines are a personal choice- I do the 1 year boosters when they come due and then do not vaccinate again. A stool sample is good. Unless something is wrong, dogs at this age really don't need blood work more than once a year- so you could probably hold off on that as well. A bile acid test is done to test the liver function and can diagnose liver problems like MVD and shunts which are very common in yorkies. Again, this is a personal decision- I believe that ALL yorkies should have this done. The vet will take blood, feed the dog, wait two hours and take blood again- so it is rather simple and not invasive at all. I would never not have one of my own yorkies tested, but again this is a personal decision.

| I would have her checked for heartworms with with her yearly checkup. I know you probably don't have the same incidence of heartworms in SLC as we do in warmer climes, but it should be done on a yearly basis anyway. I'm really interested in other's opinions, too, since I have two one year olds that are due for a checkup and boosters.

I may have it done when I go in for her rabies booster, I will have to look back on my records and see.. Bile Acids Test sounds very smart and I am going to be talking to my vet about this

| If you trust your vet, and he's not starving for money, he or she will usually do what's necessary without going overboard. I just got back with Ruger after his checkup, and the doc didn't want to do a lot of the tests I asked about, including heartworm. Just said they weren't necessary. He also looks hard at the risk/reward thing. |

| To test for heartworms, they a little blood sample and run an antigen test on it. A vet will run the test before they prescribe heartworm preventative meds. Heartworms are a threat anywhere mosquitos are present. Some will treat only during the summer months, but around here where it is warmer with frequent rains, it is best to treat year round.
