| Feeding advice please-Should I switch from Wellness Small breed? I am feeding my dog Wellness Small breed. I have had him for 1 month and he is 3 years old. His breath was very bad when I got him, and it has improved drastically since giving him Wellness. However, I have 3 concerns. 1.He eats it, but doesnt seem to like it. He eats his kibble when he realizes he isnt getting anything else. I want him to enjoy his food. 2. The kibble is very small. Max is 10 lbs and he sometimes doesnt even chew it-just gulps it down and burps. Sometimes though he does chew. 3. His stool is soft. It appears to be solid, but when I pick it up it is soft/mush. He doesn't have any parasites as I have already had him checked. Is this enough reason to switch? I am considering trying out Innova Small bites. (not EVO). I have considered Orijen but I read reviews saying it is too "rich" for some dogs, and I just afraid of making such a change. Since I have only had him for 1 month-should I continue the Wellness to see if he will adjust to it? Or make the change now? Any suggestions?=) Thank you Last edited by mandyja; 12-27-2010 at 01:13 PM. |

| Based on the things you said- I would probably try something new if it were my dog. If things get worse, you can always go back. Good Luck.

| If it were Levi, I would switch. He eats Orijen Adult and does really well on it. He loves his food and eats it enthusiastically, but what works for one dog doesn't always work for the next. Orijen sells small bags (.88 pounds) that you can buy for around $3 to try. I would definitely recommend getting small sample bags before making a big switch.

| I agree with Elissa. If you are concerned about Orijen, you could try Champion Food's other brand Acana. A lot of people here have had great success with it. My boys do best on Petcurean's Go! Grain Free Endurance formula, which is another moderate protein food. (and a larger kibble) Innova is considered a good food, but some people have concerns about the company now that they have been bought out by Proctor & Gamble.

| When I first got Buster he was on Eukenuba. He did not seem to enjoy it very much. I tried all the premium brands looking for one he would enjoy. We ended up with the Orijen and have been very happy with it. We have rotated through the puppy to regular adult, regional red and the fish and he has enjoyed it all. I did a lot of research on the site Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble . I would recommend also brushing the teeth and a water additive for plaque to help with the bad breath. |

| I read a few posts that said a grain free food is best for very active dogs. Is this true for you? I try to engage Max in as much activity as possible but it is freezing cold outside and we can't be out there long or he freezes. So right now its just indoor activity. Have you experienced anything bad with feeding more protein? I will look into Acana and I have been eyeing Orijen but just am not sure if it will be "too much" protein. |

| I was worried about the protein as well, although members here have had no trouble with the higher protein foods and it works well for their pups. So if you wanted to try it and see how your pup does, I don't think that would be a terrible idea. I decided that I was not comfortable feeding higher protein personally (mostly because it is my first pup and I am not an experienced dog owner like others and my YT for Dummies book warned against it ). Therefore, I decided that I would feed Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Potato and Duck Small Breed Bites. It has lower protein than foods like Blue Buffalo and Orijen, but is still grain free and high quality. It was also a good pick for me because my cat is already on the cat food due to food allergies, so I don't really have to worry about her getting into the dog food by accident. In the end, it doesn't really matter what food you feed as long as your pup is healthy. I had a cat that ate complete junk food and lived to be very very old with no health trouble till the very end ::shrug:: I say go with what works for your pup! (Of course we always feel more comfortable going healthier... I could never feed anyone the junk I used to now that I'm actually educated on the stuff ). |

| I use the wellness small breed for Jamie. i don't think Jamie really likes it much either because like Max she also only eats it when she is not getting anything else. However, she is 9 pounds but is a dainty eater and chews every bite. Also her stool is perfect and she is really healthy. I supplement the kibble with green beans and other veggies, which she loves. Maybe the fiber in green beans would help Max's stool. |
