| Doggy Congestion/Respiratory infection? Since Monday, Jackson has had these moments of "hacking". It's almost like he's congested. He had kennel cough before and I know it's not kennel cough... it's hard to explain. But it's something he's never had before. I know some dogs can make that "oinking" type noise when they're over-excited. But this is not normal for Jackson. It's literally like his chest is congested like a human... he's laying down in the bed with me right now and he's snoring! He never snores EVER. So he's obviously having some difficulties breathing. It acts up when he's running outside, or stuck his head out the car window, or gets really excited. I dog-sit for a Rottweiler and oddly enough, he has the same thing. He went to the vet yesterday and was put on antibiotics as the vet thinks he has a respiratory infection? Do you think even though Jackson has not been around him in 2 weeks that I could have brought something home with me? I have a vet appt. scheduled for Friday morning. But just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem. Pretty certain it's not kennel cough or anything like collapsed trachea. It's basically like, well, like he has congestion.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Awww...poor Jackson... and for as active as he is I'm sure he's not happy about it. Well I do I know that dogs can catch things from us such as colds ... and 2 weeks is about the time it could transfer from human to human... so its possible I guess...

| It does sound like he has a respiratory thing going on. Completely possible for him to catch it from the other dog or it may just be a virus going around as well. I would definitely take him in.

| Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear that Jackson isn't feeling well. I'm praying that it is only a little cold and that he will be back to being Action Jackson soon.

| Thanks for the well-wishes! Now today, it almost sounds more like kennel cough to me. And he easily could have picked up kennel cough from the dog park on Saturday even though we were not there very long. We were also in Petsmart for photos with Santa, so either one is a possibility. But Nala and Bandit (the yorkies we went with) did not catch it, but they're probably updated on their shots. Jackson had the bordatella mist up his nose, but it was definitely over 6 months ago, it was probably almost a year ago... and I know it's supposed to only last for 6 months. Well his appt. is at 9am tomorrow morning so I guess we'll see! I just feel bad for him, hacking up a storm. He woke me up every 2 hours last night coughing. It sounds like this, so I'm pretty certain it's kennel cough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZusGt...eature=related

| Can you get him in today? If he were mine, I wouldn't want to wait another day without antibiotics and risk pneumonia. |

| I am going to try -- I don't want to wait either. I called them Wednesday late afternoon and explained everything, and they still set the appt. for Fri. morning. I hate when they do that... I remember last year when he was limping bad, and ended up having lymes, they were like "oh, we have an opening in 3 days..." I'm like, I'm not waiting 3 days while my dog limps in pain! Geez. Anyways, yes, I'm going to try to get him in tonight. But for now, I haven't been letting him run around and get himself worked up or be outside except to potty.

| Get him in quickly, treatment varies and diagnosis is guess work at this stage. I know you are fretting and really upset. I would be so upset if my regular vet did not take my call any more serious than yours has. If nothing else, walk in with him and ask for a referral to a great vet if they can not see him now. If it is respiratory, an antibiotic and nebulizer is in store. Many vets rent nebulizers. The bottle of nebulizer solution usually runs about $20, the machine requires a deposit of $50 and you get $25 back when you return it. You may need the chamber and tubing separate. If there is not a sterile one with the unit, ask for a prescription for one and expect to buy it at any drugstore for about $6. You use to get them without a prescription but not now. The dog can get cold with the nebulizer blowing in on him. Cuddle him in a fuzzy fleece with just his head out and put him in a small carrier while nebulizing. The carrier will act like a chamber for the flow of med in the pocket of space he has his little nose sticking out of. He should be nebulized 3 X per day at about 30 minutes each time. Ask the vet for instructions on how he/she wants you to nebulize. Also, I hold my yorkie wrapped in a fuzzy afterwards up to my shoulder so that as they cough out the congestion you can make sure he is not choking and it helps him breathe easier. Also light tapping on the lungs helps dislodge any congestion mucus so he can cough it out. I generally lie down wth the yorkie while he is getting his treatment and keep my hand inside the fleece and under his chin. This helps them not fear the treatment so much. I hope if congestion is the problem that this will help.

Down here, the only way to get seen even the next day is to call at exactly 8:00 in the morning. You can't even schedule it the day before. The receptionist told me that they save a few slots each day for emergencies and it's first come, first served when they open that morning. Have you taken Jackson's temperature? | |

| Does anyone know how long it typically takes for kennel cough to go away? I gave him his second pill today and he's still hacking a bit, but it's definitely lessened. It's only when he gets excited, or runs around, that the hacking/coughing begins. All night last night he did not cough at all, thank goodness. So we will see how tonight goes. I gave him a bit of honey mixed in with wet food before bed and that seems to soothe his throat! I also had the humidifier on all night.

The vet believes this is just kennel cough, though, so I'm not sure if that would be necessary! Its great info for the future though!
