| Scratching and Itching?! Alittle history first: We just moved to Va from Florida. Sadie is my female yorkie who is 3 years old. We just sold the last of her three puppies that were two months old. She is on Advantix for flea and tick prevention. My question is, why is she itching and scratching so much like she has fleas and she doesn't?! I've noticed her under belly skin is a black color, which I don't remember it being that color before. Is it just dry skin? She is obsessed with scratching I think because she does it off/on all night and during the day. She is laying in my lap right now sleep, which is normal for her, but for a dog who does not have fleas, she sure is itching like she does. Any help would be appreciated. |

| Has anything changed like carpet or carpet cleaner/laundry detergent/food? My pek is highly allergic and we never found out what it is. So we know the enviroment changed for you so it could be the dryness from the heater. We don't use the heater that long in Florida. I would look at everything you used and had here in Florida and compare. I would also take her to the vet if you are unsure about the belly color. I'm no expert though...just trying to think out loud. Good luck. I know how it is for your baby to continually scratch. Keep those nails clipped. They can get hung and it can hurt her. My pek lost a toe from that damage. |

| It sounds like she might have developed allergies. I don't know where in Virginia you are, but the DC-Metro area has a particularly big problem with allergies in both humans and canines. I'd talk with your regular vet first, maybe try a course of Zyrtec to start with. If it doesn't get better, you would want to consult with an allergist who specializes in doggie allergies. There's a great one in Gaithersburg, MD (Dr. Jeffers).

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Severe/frequent itching really needs to be seen by a vet . Is the "black areas" on her belly sort of look like little patches of tiny black spots? Does she have it in her armpits? Where is she itching? This could be allergies, a yeast infection, the beginnings of pyoderma, diet, or a primary disease that causes skin issues as a secondary symptom. Skin issues can be really tough on generalist vets...so I'd recommend a Vet Derm, if you can see one. They are truly wonderful when dealing with skin stuff!

| my 4 month old puppy scratches a lot every day, i heard salmon oil will moisture their skin and u can get it from local pet store, i just brought one but too soon to see any result. Another way i tried to solve the itching problem on him is to make an oatmeal bath. It works like a charm :] |

| so many things can cause dogs to itch that it's almost impossible to narrow down sometimes. Two of mine are allergic to any type of fish or poultry. It could be weeds, especially since you have moved. It could be a type of carpet if you have any in your new place. Sometimes groomers don't take the time to completely rinse out the shampoo and it's a major source of dry skin problems. Just go down the list, and maybe keep her off grass (which could have chiggars)Can I Treat My Dog For Chiggars With Over The Counter Medicine Or Home Remedies, If So What Can I Use? and carpet, go back to feeding her regular food if you have changed that, shampoo her at home and use a diluted down shampoo and rinse extremely well.
