| Raw diet? Our Great Dane is raw fed, and I would very much like to have little Valor on a raw diet as well, but when we attempted to transition him at the same time as Leonidas (dane) he experienced bloody stool and two weeks later vommited blood. This was too much for me and he's now back on EVO Red Meat. Basically, I was just wondering if anyone here has/does feed raw to their toy breeds and if they have any thoughts or experience with it to share. Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've been feeding pre-made raw for almost 3 years now (Primal, Natures Variety, Stella&Chewys). What kind of raw did you try? Are you doing pre-made or prey model?

| We feed Prey Model. One of the primary benefits I was looking for was the clean, shiny teeth that come from munching bones. PoochieHeaven, what do you feed your little one? ETA: Valor's first raw meal was a chicken drumstick, which he managed with gusto. He had no appetite and bloody stools for the next two days, so when he was stabalized we switched to cornish game hen quarters, thinking that the chicken bones were to large for him. This went well for about a week, when he had the evening incident of vomitting blood. That was too scary for me and I gave up on raw for my little one. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience and if maybe I gave up too soon?

I do think it is harder to prey model raw feed Piper (the Biewer) compared to Duke. But it is MUCH cheaper to feed Piper compared to Duke. Have you tried just starting with chicken for a few weeks (I think that is what they suggest...). Luckily both Duke and Piper don't get upset tummies to easily, so I can easily switch proteins or introduce new easily, but I know when I first started they suggest just chicken for a while. But maybe he has an allergy to chicken and thus the bloody stool? Another option you could try to transit to raw would be to start with dehydrated/freeze dried or pre made raw and then slowly work in the meat. Good luck, I love the benefits as well!

| i feed prey model to my 6 pound little guy. chicken drumsticks are one of his favs! but he NEVER had bloody stool or vomited blood...he didnt vomit at all when we switched him! that is something to worry about and i really have no idea what it could be...do you have a holistic vet in your area you could discus it with? also, there is a PMR feeding group on here and if you join and ask your questions there, you might get some more help from people with a ton of experience feeding PMR. hope you join the group! |

I'm not new to raw - just to raw for tiny dogs - and our Dane's transition has been seamless (we used the following protien introduction order: chicken [solely for two weeks], turkey, pork, beef, fish, organs).

| I feed pre-made raw to Jackson a few times a week. He's 15lbs so it's a lot harder to afford the pre-made stuff... but he does very well on it. We use Primal or Stella & Chewy's.

I like to get the pre made raw when we travel as it is much easier and I always cringe when buying a bag as Duke can almost eat the whole thing in a day.

Some loose stool is one thing, but vomiting is another. And vomiting blood is even more concerning than just vomiting. Also, bloody stools can really be a concern - esp if/when they are dark, tarry bloody stools. If they have just a bit of fresh, red blood - then it sometimes can be chalked up to minor/temp irritation in the colon. Luckily, I never had any issues w/ transitioning to raw...but if there had been vomiting, I would have considered that this diet, or protein source (or something) wasn't the right thing for my kiddos. Best of luck and please keep us posted !

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I have been feeding Izzy premade raw for 6 months.. We have never had bloody stool or vomit with blood in it either... We did try the PMR diet for a very short time.... Izzy did NOT do well on that...so we went back to the premade raw... We use Primal and Natures Variety and love it!!

This. Whether they are supposed to or not, bone can and does irritate intestines even if it's raw. Why not just start with pre-made raw and then try and transition from there if prey model is very important to you?
