| Orijen formulation change I don't use Orijen, but I know many here do. I got this in an email, so I thought I would share it here: Champion Petfoods has made major enhancements to their Orijen line, now called 'Orijen 80-20', with exception of Regional Red and the Senior formulas are '75-25'. So you are probably thinking "Why The Change?". Champion Petfoods base their values on Leadership and Authenticity with the emphasis on "Biologically Appropriate foods from Fresh Regional Ingredients" which lead them to constant innovation and endless improvement. The most noticable enhancement was the higher Fresh Regional Meat inclusions. "No dry dog or cat food on earth can match the quality and quantity of Orijen's fresh regional ingredients". Questions & Answers: Q: ORIJEN 80-20 LOOKS DIFFERENT. WHY IS THE KIBBLE DIFFERENT IN SHAPE AND SIZE? A: The organic shape of ORIJEN 80-20 results from the high FRESH meat inclusions that give our kibble its unique shape, smell and colour. Unlike conventional, mass-produced pet foods, ORIJEN is made in small batches from ingredients that are natural and arrive FRESH each day. Compare this to bread sold at a big chain grocery store where each loaf appears identical due to their highly processed, commodity-based ingredients. Almost half of ORIJEN’s ingredients arrive FRESH each day, so they’re never frozen and are unprocessed – just as Nature intended. As with any fresh and natural ingredient, natural variation occurs. For example, the moisture content of fresh meats can vary substantially. These natural variations affect the color, size and shape of ORIJEN kibble. REMEMBER, IF EACH KIBBLE LOOKS THE SAME, HIGHLY PROCESSED INGREDIENTS WERE USED. Q: WILL ADDED FRESH MEAT MAKE THE FORMULA RICHER? A: Richness is not based entirely on meat content. Protein, especially fat and calorie content, also determines the richness of a formula. While the fresh meat content of 80-20 ORIJEN is substantially increased, ORIJEN’s protein, fat and calories have changed very little. A smooth transition is expected from ORIJEN 70-30 to ORIJEN 80-20. Q: EXACTLY HOW IS ORIJEN 80-20 BETTER FOR MY DOG OR CAT? A: MORE FRESH MEATS: Champion Petfoods has substantially increased the amount of meat, particularly, the amount of fresh meat. Their fresh meats are never frozen or exposed to chemical preservatives and their nutritional properties are superior to any other ingredient form. MORE MEAT VARIETY: Chicken liver from free-run chickens and beef liver (Regional Red) from free-range Alberta beef provides a highly palatable source of lean meat protein. As with all their local meats, their new liver ingredients are passed ‘fit for human consumption’ and delivered FRESH. MORE DIVERSITY: To better express the diversity of a natural diet, ORIJEN 80-20 features a minimum ‘Top Five’ ingredients that are entirely animal-based. • ORIJEN Adult: *boneless chicken, chicken meal, *boneless salmon, turkey meal, herring meal. • ORIJEN 6 Fish: *Boneless salmon, salmon meal, herring meal, *boneless herring, *boneless walleye. • ORIJEN Regional Red: *Boneless wild boar, *deboned lamb, *beef liver, *deboned pork, lamb meal. • ORIJEN Cat & Kitten: *Boneless chicken, chicken meal, *boneless salmon, turkey meal, *chicken liver, herring meal. * Delivered FRESH. NEVER FROZEN. NO PRESERVATIVES. Q: HAVE THE CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS LEVELS CHANGED? A: Most high protein diets contain excessive amounts of calcium and phosphorus due to the high inclusions of meal ingredients such as chicken or lamb meal. Unlike meat meal ingredients (which are high in ash from bone), fresh meats are boneless, which means they are low in calcium and phosphorus to keep ORIJEN’s minerals in a perfect natural balance. Q: HOW WILL ORIJEN 80-20 AFFECT MY PETS STOOL? A: If you were previously feeding ORIJEN 70-30 you probably will not notice any difference. If you are switching to ORIJEN 80-20 from a different brand you will notice differences. Your pet's stool will become darker in color and smaller in size, and you may also notice that it smells a bit more. Here’s why. Meat is comprised largely of protein, and protein in turn, is made up of amino acids. One of the main elements in amino acids is nitrogen. In addition to this, two amino acids – methionine and cystine – also contain sulfur. When protein is digested, the resulting byproducts include hydrogen sulfide, methane and methyl mercaptan. The first and last of the substances are foul smelling, and the more protein, generally the worse the smell. Q: WILL I HAVE TO TRANSITION MY PET TO ORIJEN 80-20? A: If you are currently feeding ORIJEN 70-30, you will not have to do a transition as the ingredients, protein and fat levels are similar. If you have been feeding another brand of food, then yes, Champion Petfoods recommends that you do a slow transition. Dogs are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt, which is why it’s important to introduce a new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset. Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next five to seven days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN. Q: HAS ORIJEN 80-20 BEEN TESTED? A: Product testing for ORIJEN 80-20 was comprehensive. Scores were high in palatability tests that favoured ORIJEN 80-20 over ORIJEN 70-30. In ORIJEN Adult, there was a 3.29 to 1 consumption ratio for 80-20 versus 70-30. In tests on Regional Red, the ratio was 2.97 to 1 in favour of the 75-25 versus 70-30 formulation. Tests on stools revealed no change in quality after transitioning from ORIJEN 70-30 to ORIJEN 80-20 both consumer pluses we feel positive about. In addition, transitioning was uneventful. For any questions, concerns or comments with their newly enhanced '80-20', feel free to call Champion Petfoods Customer Care at 1-877-939-0006 or email at customerservice@championpetfoods.com
