Donating YT 30K Club Member | Weight loss question I have been trying to get some weight off Pixie and Roxie for awhile now. I switched them all to a weight management kibble (except Nikki) and started counting out the number of pieces they get. I gradually reduced the amount they get. I switched them to weight management biscuits and cheerios for treats. Pixie has lost 1/2 lb in the past 5 months and Roxie 4 ounces. Pixie could still lose another 3-4 ounces and Roxie another 8 ounces. Cali maintains a good weight on more food than they get. So I guess dogs are like people some can eat more and not gain while other eat less and still gain weight. Pixie is always begging for food. My question is Do they adjust to the reduced amount of food or will she always be hungry? I have never dieted myself so I really don't know. I feel guilty every time I go eat something. With winter here they get even less exercise and Pixie has always had a very low activity level anyway. Thanks

| Just from my own personal experience with my little one's, I would say no. I went through this with Muffin and she never did adjust.

| just curious, how much do they weigh? Thats what i dont understand. In another thread we discussed how my dogs dont really get walked. They should and we need to work on that, but due to certain reasons we stopped. but my yorkie and lhasa apso get free fed where they have access to food all day and rare exersize beyond running around at home and they are normal weight. but you hear of these dogs that are 1o lbs at 6 months and the big yorkies, are they big in weight, bone structure and stature or what i wonder. (not bashing anybodys dogs) but u even hear of people giving them ice cream and some w liver pancreitis etc, i just wonder if some of these sizes and health issues are in what they eat. or maybe like humans their metabolism varies... i dont know..... maybe your vet could advise u in what could get some weight off. good luck. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Whatever mysterious metabolic processes operate in humans operate in dogs, I guess. I free feed Thor, and he is skinny as a toothpick. And the thing is, he LOVES food, as long as it's not his kibble. If I give him a lot of treats, he just eats less kibble. So I assume he's not hungry. Me on the other hand.... It really would be a bummer to be a dog and hungry all day, wouldn't it? There must be some type of experiment you could do. Like put out something they normally wouldn't want to eat, like broccolli. If your dieting doggies eat it, that probably means they are hungry enough they don't care what it tastes like anymore.

| Ha! I was going to suggest adding more fiber to her food to help give her a feeling of fullness... like broccoli (mine like it), string beans, carrots, or even adding Cherrios to her food to make it seem like more to her. Don't know if you're using any probiotics/digestive enzymes with them or not... but they may help too.

| I am not a fan of weight management formulas as they are usually a lesser quality product. I'd rather feed a high quality food in a smaller portion and supplement with high fiber, low calories snacks. Frozen green beans (slightly thawed) were the answer when Lady was diagnosed with diabetes almost nine years ago and had to lose weight. I would give them to her in a Busy Buddy Twist & Treat after she ate her dinner or she would just bark for more. Putting them in a treat dispensing toy slowed her down enough for her brain to realize she was full. I give Lady chopped apples, berries, carrots, even chopped celery during the day. I will give her a small piece of cheese (she loves Gouda!) here and there, too. She also loves pieces of rice cakes. |

The only weight formula I'd consider is Wellness Core Reduced Fat. I've read lots of success stories on this food but I still consider it really high quality.

| Frozen Green Beans has been what I've used as a weight reduction food. Mixed with Kibble.

| Bogey was a total pork chop not that long ago and was up to 14.5 lbs I knew he needed to get some of that weight down so I bought the NB Weight Formula. Previously he was eating NB either Bison or the Venison variety. I fed the Weight Control to him for about 2 months and he didn't loose anything. So I switched him back to NB Lamb and Brown rice and just cut the amount of food back to under 1/4 cup twice daily but counted the pieces. He's now at about 10.25 lbs.

| Not at all. They chew on C.E.T dentals.....they soften, but take a bit longer. My dogs love them, just as treats.

| I will agree on the green beans but I don't give frozen. I buy frozen, but I thaw them and mix with their food.

| Watch out with bones, I just paid a fortune on a cracked tooth for Daisy. The dentist told me that if you cannot make an indentation in the chew items you are giving, you are risking a cracked tooth. Not sure on frozen green beans but he did tell me that ice cubes were another leading cause of cracked teeth - second only to animal bones like marrow bones and hooves. Their teeth are not as strong as we might think
