| Yearly vet visits Jackson turned 2yrs old in October. He was last at the vet in March-ish, I believe. He already had his 1 year booster of DHPP as well as his rabies vaccine. Our vet informed me that he is good for the next 3yrs shot-wise (however, I don't even know if I'll be doing DHPP again in 3yrs, but we'll see then). So basically he's good on shots until 2013. But I know it's advised to still take them to the vet for yearly check-ups. To be honest, I wouldn't even know what to ask for them to 'check'. What is the protocol for that? I don't need or want anything too excessive or unnecessary. Like, is bloodwork unnecessary if he's perfectly healthy as far as I and the vet can tell, or do people do it anyways? He tested positive for Lymes back in January and was treated with antibiotics for 30 days and back to normal. So I guess a Lymes test would be smart to do again? Heartworm test? (Jackson has not had heartworm nor flea/tick meds since September). Any help is appreciated; this appointment will probably not be until after the holidays.

| I have the same questions as you do. Teddy completed his 1-year vaccs and physical yesterday. I asked our vet his thoughts about bloodwork. His response was that he doesn't think it is necessary to do an annual panel of tests. He said as long as the dog is eating, eliminating, sleeping, exercising, and behaving well, and doesn't show any signs of anything being off, then he would not recommend blood tests until later in life (or pre-anesthesia for dental work). He did recommend coming in once a year to have a general exam in which the vet listens to heart and lungs, palpates the abdomen, checks the knees, and all the rest. | In addition to shots our vet does wellness bloodwork and heartworm test. I think the bloodwork is good because it can tell you if they have a problem with some organ or have diabetes or anything like that

| I usually ask for a general health check exam, the same thing they do before giving vaccines, and to address any concerns I may have. I make a list to take to the vet. I also request fecal exams, Heartworm, and Lymes tests, to be sure the HW preventatives are working, and as I do not vaccinate against Lymes disease, I feel it's important to check to make sure they don't have it. This is what I request be done, in addition to what my vet thinks should also be done, for each individual pet, taking into account that pet's age, activity level, and history. After the hands on exam, I expect the vet to make recommendations if they have concerns about anything found on exam, usually they will want to run bloodwork or tests dependent on their findings, and on my ancient dog they run a senior profile bloodwork regardless, to really be able to access his health and to head off any potential problems. This is where having a good relationship with one vet comes in handy, because the vet will tailor your pets medical care based on the pet's history, and if one keeps changing vets all the time, you lose that benefit to a degree.

| It's all about how careful you want to be. Blood work is pretty important to check organ function, blood count, etc. You catch things before they present a big problem this way... They are extremely important after about age 5, but are a really good thing to do before. Heartworm test yearly. Shouldn't use preventative year-round in most states. Fecal at least yearly. Exam to check heart, lungs, gums, abdomen, etc. Very necessary.

I am in woodsy Northern Virginia and there are only 2-3 months out of the year that the buggies aren't in business. Even during Dec, Jan, Feb, we have warm spells where the flies, moths, and who knows what else come out. I keep my boys on Interceptor year round to protect against all of the things in addition to heartworm that the pills supposedly guard against. | |

| Levi is due in January for his yearly. I plan on the just the general yearly physical exam plus bloodwork, heartworm test, and fecal test. He isn't due for any vaccines until 2013. I also keep him on both flea and heartwom preventative year-round.
