| Bad experience at vet's office OK, I'm still upset and don't know if I have reason to be. My DH says I am making a big deal out of nothing. Yesterday Macy had her heart worm check up. (2) Vet Techs come in, one to hold Macy and one to draw blood. The Vet Tech sticks Macy's little left leg to draw blood (I was expecting the yelp and thought everything would be OK) until I saw the Vet Tech wasn't getting any blood and saw her moving the needle back and forth under her skin trying to poke a vein. Macy was shaking and I was about ready to faint. I told the Vet Tech to stop. She then asked me if I wanted to go into another room while they tried again. I definitely didn't want to leave her alone so I asked the Vet Tech to try a different leg. She stuck Macy and immediately began drawing blood without moving the needle hoping to hit something. Just wanted to know if it is normal procedure to start digging around trying to hit a vein if you first don't succeeed and if anyone else has had this happen. I know this hurts because when I have to give blood they have a hard hitting my veins because they "roll". I had a tech do this very same thing to me and I thought I would pass out.

| To be honest, whenever any type of bloodwork needs to be done, the vet takes my dogs to the back??? So I don't see what happens to them. Stupid probably for me to allow this, but honestly I trust my vet to do what's best for my dogs. I have been using her for many many years and feel totally comfortable. When my son was around ayear old, our pediatrician said it was a requirement to have them tested for lead. Well little did I know that it was going to be one of those blood tests. The stupid technician did exactly what you explained happened with your dog. I wanted to die. My poor little baby was crying his heart out in my arms and I was not able to do anything to help him. Needless to say, when my daughter turned one and the pediatrician said I had to have this done for her - I did not do it. I mean where do we live that there would be lead circa 1950s??? NO! So I didn't have it done.

| It's always my vet who takes the blood, and the tech helps hold them. I would be upset too if they couldnt find blood, I think a little one is much harder than a bigger dog, so if they cant do it, maybe they should get the vet! Good for you for sticking up for your little furbaby!

| This would upset me too; but it does happen even with humans, like you said. For some reason, they can never get blood out of my veins either. I have a '3 strikes and you're out' policy. Go get someone who can do it. The vet techs should do the same thing ~ if they can't get the blood - then go get help. Sounds like they got it though.

| I have blood drawn all the time and, yes, this is a standard way to try and get a vein. It actually doesn't hurt that bad. I mean, it's not terribly comfortable, but it's also not that painful. I really wouldn't be too worried. It doesn't sound like they did anything wrong IMO.

| I am a pediatric nurse and my rule is 2 attempts and then I'm out! I would never dig around hoping to hit something. I do recommend the lead test on children, you never know what can have lead in it. There were thousands of toys recalled because of lead content. Most kids put everything in their mouth including toys. Sorry you had such a bad experience. I would be mad too! |

| I'm still upset today and my husband says I need to forget it. He thinks I'm turning into a nut case with Macy. I'm not against drawing blood, it's for her own good, but please give me some sense that you have some competency in your job and you know what you are doing. I just had to tell someone on YT because my DH thinks I'm turning into a wired dog lady.

| Over a lifetime, I have never had one of them scream when they were given their shots or had blood drawn.

| I really like the vet, just not the vet tech. Next time I am going to speak up and either request the vet draw blood or ask for another vet tech. I think each vet has their own vet tech so not sure if I'll have any luck. It's nice to know I'm not a weird dog lady as my DH says. From my experience yesterday they will never take her into a room without me to draw blood again.

| As a vet tech I know how hard it can be to poke the little ones. Of course I always hate doing it but then you have the little tiny veins to worry about. We NEVER do this in front of the owner, not because thiers anything to hide but when someone is watching you poke their baby the pressure is intense and the dog can often read the owners worried vibes. Usually its a "3 pokes your out" rule of thumb, saying if you don't get it by the third poke you had it to soemone else, that being said thier should also not be a lot of "fishing" going on under the skin. Sometimes when you poke the vien rolls just out of the way and it's less painfull to redirect while still under the skin instead of taking it out and peircing the skin again. You should only try this maybe twice though, searching around under the skin for the vein isn't fun for the pet or the owner. Sorry you had a bad expeirence, I would ask for the lead nurse next time blood is needed. |

| I know it's stressful for owners to watch and it's easy get upset. Honestly, I would have them take her to the back next time so you don't have to watch. If you get upset, she is going to get more upset. Trying to poke around for a vein under the skin for an extended period isn't good, so maybe a different tech can do it next time. Techs do it much more than vets though, so the vet may or may not be any better at it... Small dogs gets draws exclusively out of the jugular here. It isn't always easy to draw from a small dog. Not really sure why some vets do it in front of owners. They always go to the back here. Anyway, they may have had an easier time finding the jugular. She will be fine. No worries.

| OK, so I am turning into a weird dog lady. Macy has always gone to this vet clinic and they have always drawn blood in front of me. Hopefully I won't have to worry about this again until next year. I know being a vet tech probablly isn't one of the easiest jobs especially when the owner is a WEIRD DOG LADY.
