| Yorkie not eating - woes and worrys Hi All, I wanted to Introduce myself, I'm new to this forum and I've been researching it extensively! I have a 1 year old yorkie at home that I adopted almost a year ago. In the beginning he ate what we gave him and me being amateur about his food ( I mixed like 10 different types of dry kibble - premium brands - artemis, blue buffalo, innova red meat small bites, blue buffalo senior (to balance out the high protein content in the other foods....and because it gives glucosamine for their joints..i know what was I thinking!!!!!!, any sample bags I would get, if he liked it/ate it, I would put it in the mix). As time went on he got pickier about his food, some days he would eat, some days not. I don't know why I mixed the foods, I thought it would offer him more variety, His vet told me it could be hard on his stomach and to stick with one food. But before the vet telling me that I would research more food..when he had his phase of not eating his dry food I went out and bought The Honest Kitchen Force and he gobbled that stuff up like no ones business...after a while he would just lick it off. Then I got worried about his weight, he is 3.4 lbs and 1 year old and a skinny little thing and I wanted to fatten him up, safely. So i added wet food, then he just began to lick the wet food off the dry. and now he is the pickiest thing ever and it is my fault. Then I read threads about pancreatitis and thought oh crap, and now I am all worried about pancreatitis, hypoglycemia, etc etc. So NOW I have a half bag of Royal Canine Yorkshire Terrior..or sensitive stomach that he preferred over all other foods but I know its not really good...and now he runs away from it!! I have a huge bag of Innova Red Meat small bites..turns away from it I have a half bag of Blue Buffalo Senior I have a 3/4 full bag of FROMM Whitefish and Potato which he loved before but now he turns away from. I also have a huge box of Force from The Honest Kitchen I also have cans of Wellness 95% meat grain free dog food (like 2 cans). I don't want to give him the wet food all the time, I'm more comfortable giving the dry but I've spoiled him. So Now i'm thinking, should I start with Royal Canin since it is more enticing and get him to eat the dry first (he skipped the last 2 meals because we only put it out dry-- if I try to entice him with one or two pieces he just rolls all over it). So should I continue to put out the dry until he eventually eats and then after he finishes give him a tiny bit of force + wet canned as a little finisher/treat? If I mix them, he just ignores the dry completely. Maybe that will teach him to eat his dry first and then and only then will he get his wet? I'm crazy I know. I just have all this food I want to be able to use it. I figured I would do what I mentioned, go through Royal Canin, and my other bags and then stick to one brand of dry food! Yikes I think I got bored with his food and went crazy like a 5 year old. Those damn pet shop people are so convincing. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I would put him on one food and stick with that. Their stomachs are so sensitive and it will mess them up. I feed mine Blue Buffalo Adult formula. They seem to like all the flavors. Look at the forums here and there should be alot of advice from senior talkers that can help you. Oh and Welcome!!

| I was a bit guilty of the same thing as you a few months back. I just thought my dogs should have a different "flavor". I didn't even switch brands, just flavors. Yep...wasn't a good thing. We ended up with 1 having severe diahrrea and the other two mild to moderate. One food and one food only. Even the treats should stay the same. I've learned my lesson on that one also. I've been giving my most sensitive tummy guy a little bit of plain yogurt every day to keep all the probiotics in check. It seems to help him some. I feed Taste of the Wild Roasted Bison and Venison. I do sprinkle a little of Stella and Chewy's Freeze Dried Duck Duck Goose dinner on top, and they seem to enjoy it.

| I guess I'll start him on one food, hes never had any issues with diarrhea, loose stools, etc. The only time has ever vomited (small amount) was when he ate the force mixed with dry kibble with such gusto that he just swallowed the dry kibble whole. I am doing exactly that just putting out one kind of dry food for now to eat and maybe saving a tiny bit of force or wet food as a treat instead of anything else. My only concern is that he is starving himself. He barely ate anything yesterday, and for dinner I just put out dry, he didn't touch it. For breakfast today, same thing, didn't touch it. I didn't even give him his chews or treats or ANYTHING because I want him to eat his meals first. I'm already worried (can you blame me?) because he is just moping around. At what point do I start to worry when he still doesn't just cave and start eating? How many days will he do this cherade for before he's actually eating what we give him? At what point should I be like Ok its been 2 whole days he hasn't ingested ANYTHING..what do I do? What about hypoglycemia? Should I give him a lick of teaspoon of honey or something to keep his sugar up? Hes drinking his water fine. |

| I have a 14 year old Maltese that was just as picky as yours. She would eat something for a couple of days, then turn her nose up at it and practically starve herself. It is so frustrating. About 8 months ago, I had a coupon for some commercially prepared raw (Nature's Variety) and I decided to try it. She ate it immediately, and in the past 8 months has not turned her nose up at it, not even once. I wish I had discovered it before 14 years of struggle. I also just adopted / rehomed a 1 year old Yorkie. His previous owners said that he wasn't a "good eater." They were feeding him Nutro and bragged that they were feeding him the best that there was. Nutro is crap food, but I didn't say anything. You should see this guy chow down on the raw ... and readily eat kibble the rest of the day. I did not transition him slowly from the crap food to the good food. I threw the crap food away and he ate 100% of the good food beginning with the first time I fed him and there was absolutely no digestive upset or loose stools. I've read all the stuff on why raw diets are supposed to be healthier, but to be honest that is not what sold me on the food. What sold me was how much the dogs like it and how readily they eat it. Feeding them has become SOOOOO much easier. If you have access to it, I highly recommend trying it. There are several great brands, Nature's Variety, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, and others. I know Nature's Variety had a coupon (buy one bag, get one free) on their website, it might still be there. You have to fill out a very short survey (3 or 4 questions) to get it.

You can consider a few things. You can try adding a little warm water. Maybe he'll like it if it's soft? Or you can sprinkle some Parmesan Cheese on the food to see if that entices. Good luck!

| I've tried Primal Raw (I got a sample pack from Krisers) and he also gave me two Stella and Chewys Beef patties as samples as well, Niko loved it. But I was searching on YT and I'm worried about the bacteria associated with these foods, and I personally get grossed out giving him the Primal Raw. I was speaking to my vet about this whole situation and she wasn't too pleased about the RAW food either because of the bacteria, but she is also one that recommends science diet/royal canin because I'm sure she makes $$ off of it somehow..so I just follow what I know is right and do a lot of research. She told me to just give him dry and one food only and to entice him with some wet over it, but then he only eats the wet and leaves the dry and even if i put like one tiny lil wee bit of a teaspoon of wet, he will still go the whole day eating that one tiny teaspoon, driving me nuts! |

You may want to start another thread for you post. Otherwise, you question may get lost in the shuffle of the original poster. There are many reasons why dogs don't eat and Yorkie seem to be some of the more fussy. I am to assume that you have tried other foods, mixed in cooked chicken or boiled hamburg? There are some tried and true tricks to get even the fussiest Yorkie to eat. Like I said, start your own thread and you'll get lots of help and advice. Always remember though, we are not Vets here and you always want to consult with your Vet also concerning any health issues. Good luck!

| I can't speak for the other brands, but Nature's Variety destroys any pathogens by a high pressure Pasteurization process. The potential of salmonella on chicken and eggs, e-coli and lysteria in beef, trych in pork, etc, is very real, which is why we have to cook chicken and ground beef through and through, and handle and prepare carefully so as not to cross-contaminate other foods that we cook and eat for ourselves. If only the meats we buy could undergo the high pressure Pasteurization, our food would be much safer. With regards to pathogens, I strongly suspect that the raw food I feed is safer than the meats we buy for ourselves at the grocery store.

| OwnedByJezebel and KJLive, Thanks for the information, I did not know about the bacteria non-issue surrounding S&C's and NV, I will definitely keep it in mind for the future. For now, after starving himself through a few meals, Niko finally started to eat a few of his kibble. To entice him, a put a few drops of Omega 3 Fish Oil on it and it usually works. After he finishes all or most of it, I give him a spoon of his Wellness Canned which he gobbles up feverishly, and then he gets his dental chews. If he does not eat first his dry kibble, then he doesn't get his wet food or his dental chew (he has another antler he always plays with anyway). I think he is starting to get the point since we are being strict! |
