Neuter questions Harley will be 6 months old in a few days and I am getting him neutered. I have some questions for those of you who have gone through this. I trust my vet but I am very nervous. He isn't to have any food of water the night before, and I understand why. He will get dropped off at 8AM and have to spend the night. I was told he doesn't eat or drink till next day. He is just 3 1/2 pounds and wonder if he should go that long without water or food. I didn't think to ask if he would have an IV for hydration. Is that common? I wanted to pick him up before they close on the day of surgery since no one stays all night at the vets but they said no. Did anyone bring your pup home same day? I could keep an eye on him if he were here with me. He is a calm dog already so I'm not worried about him being overly excited at home. Please help me be less worried. I just am not sure what is "normal" practice. Thanks!:yorkiej: |
I don't understand why Harley has to spend the night. When I spayed my shorkie and my Bassets they came home the same day and Zach is going on Saturday to be neutered and he will be coming home the same day. |
What was the reasoning for keeping him overnight? If no one is on-duty overnight, I would be more comfortable with my pup at home so I could watch him. I'm just curious about the explanation your vet gave you. |
It doesn't make sense for him to be required to stay if nobody will be there to watch him. I've had 2 males neutered and 3 females spayed, and none of them had to stay overnight. Also, neutering isn't nearly as invasive as spaying, they don't have to cut through layers of muscle to neuter, so I really don't understand why it requires an overnight stay. They were also allowed to eat as soon as they wanted food. If you have the option, I would find another vet. |
My vet said that they prefer to keep them overnight, but I brought Sarge home. I'm retired and could be there at home with him. I don't see why they want your baby to stay if there won't be anyone there with him. |
My Riley turned 6 months, this past Wednesday. I am taking him to get Neutered on Fri., Nov. 12th. I drop him off in the morning around 8am and I'm picking him up after 4pm, the same day. |
Vet said they were to stay calm after surgery. I can do that here. I will call the other vets in my area to get a feel for them. I hate to switch because they have seen Harley since he was 9 weeks old, but I have to do what I think is best for him. Thanks for all the help :) |
I'm going to have to echo other posters, it just doesn't make sense to me. If someone was on duty, I guess I would understand; but if no one is there, I would insist on taking him home. I feel though as pet parents we know our babies really well and we know when something is up, or they're just not feeling well. If something happens to Harley, who's going to help? At least at home, you can rush him to the ER vet if needed. As far as eating goes, I was allowed to feed my boy after 7 pm, but a reduced portion size. Of course I fed him something that would be easy for his tummy; a small portion of boiled chicken breast and white rice. I fed him a more normal amount in the morning. Have pre-op blood work done before neuter, and ask if his growth plates close. The growth plates I didn't know of before Kaji's neuter, it's something I learned from one of the great breeders here on YT. I'm guessing I didn't hurt Kaji much because he was a year old when he was finally neutered. If at all possible, get his retained baby teeth extracted and have him microchipped all at the same time. This helps you avoid having him put under again. I know most vets will say it's not necessary for them to be put under for microchipping, but if I may, Kaji had a pretty significant bloody scab on his back. I'm glad I had it all done at the same time. He didn't feel a thing. |

One last thing, if you can, plan his neuter closer to the weekend so you have a few days to really watch him. (if you work) If you can, schedule the neuter for a Thursday, take Friday off, and you'll have an extra day to watch him. |
Hi, my Max was nuetered one week ago. I dropped him off at 10:30am and picked him up at 05:30pm on the same day. The surgery was a bit more complicated due to one of his testicles had not decended. The day of the surgery after returning home. Max could only have broth and water and the next day was free to eat whatever...he was very sleepy and i felt better being at home with him. When i left the home it was for a short period of time. I stayed home the weekend with him. He has to wear a cone because he tried to lick the area and that is a big no-no. Day 1 and 2 he rested, day 3 he was much stronger and now a week later is back to his old self and taking daily walks. Hope this is helpful. |
Freddy was neutered and microchipped last Friday. I took him to the Vet at 7 am and picked him up at 5:30pm. They told me to call them around 2pm to see if i can pick him up the same day or not. The vet is monitoring the dogs after neutering/spaying and if he feels like it would be better for the dog to stay for some reason, they will let you know. (but i also think that they would have somebody there if they keep your dog over night) Freddy was doing ok he was just really sleepy and hungry. I was not allowed to give him food until at least 9 pm that day. They said it would be better to wait until next day. I gave Freddy his regular food (smaller portion) and he was fine. Saturday morning he was up and running! I had to keep him calm. Tried to make him sleep by laying on the couch all weekend myself :) I got some pain reliever for him but i don't think he really needed it. I think it might have been a little easier for him because he is one of the 'larger' yorkies. 10 lbs at 6 months. They also didn't need to pull any teeth. |
I called three other vets in my area today and no one would let me take him home same day. So I stopped by my regular vet and pleaded my case again. There are three vets in my regular office and the lady vet said she would let me take him home that night before they close. Yay! We have an appointment for Wednesday since she only works Tuesday and Wednesdays. It was this week or wait till next month. So we are on! Taking Thursday off from work. Glad I didn't give up on this :) |
YAY! See how a little persistence pays off? I'm glad Harley will have someone to watch over him, and you'll have an extra day to keep an eye on him. I bet that brings you peace of mind. :) |
