| not pottying after neuter.. Denali got neutered today. I was a nervous wreck dropping him off this morning, but the vet called this afternoon after he was done to let us know he was waking up and we picked him up earlier this evening. Well he hasn't gone potty since we got him home. He has been sleeping a lot and not really drinking too much water, but he normally pees pretty frequent so this is not normal. He also has something(similar to a diaper) covering his behind and part of his tummy so he cannot lick because that is all he wants to do and we weren't prepared w/ a cone. I am going to call my vet in the morning if he still hasn't gone but i wanted to see if anyone here knew anything about this.

| It may take a day or two to get his system going again after fasting for the surgery. Does he get up and walk around at all? If he's woozie on his feet, you may want to stay up and see that he wakes up every hour, and offer him a small amount of food and water. Also, if you can check his temperature, make sure he's not cold, sometimes they are a bit slow to work the anesthesia out of their systems. Once he's up and walking around fine and has his wits about him, he should be okay.

| update Thanks for the replies guys. I was a little worried but he ended up peeing right before we went to bed. He slept a lot yesterday but he wasn't woozy. When he was awake he would walk around or roll onto his back for me to pet him. Also, i didn't check his temperature but he did sleep curled up in his blankie all night, so i'm sure he was warm. I'm relieved now that he is getting better. Oh, but about how long does the swelling take to go down, the nurse told us that he would be slightly swollen but it should never get any bigger than it was before, which it isn't but he is still slightly swollen. ?

| The swelling should go down in a day or two. What kind of stitches did the vet use? The self-dissolving kind that does not need removing, I hope. That's the kind my baby had. In fact, I don't see stitches at all. He was jumping up and down when I picked him up and absolutely his normal hyper self the entire week during recovery. I think that's because my vet uses gas to sedate so it is easier to come out of it. My friend's puppy was neutered the same time as mine with a different vet who uses staples. He had lots and lots of complications (bleeding, oozing liquid, swollen, pain, the works). If your Denali is only slightly swollen, he should be fine. But if it doesn't go away in a few days, check with you vet again. |
