| could it be fleas or something else? I was giving my Sophie her usual tummy rub tonight and when I looked down at her like I always do...she had what I thought was a rash, but it looks sort of like bug bites. I put her in the bath with some warm water and I saw what looked like a small brown tiny bug moving up her stomach, I grabbed it, squeezed it between my fingers to kill it and threw it in the water. I kept checking her and found no others. I was wondering if this is what flea bites look like. I feel terrible she is all bit up and I was wondering if I should run to the store and get some flea shampoo, or wash her in some dawn. I haven't ever dealt with fleas before, so I am new to this and wondering if anyone thinks that her bug bites might be flea bites in the picture below. I had to resize the picture, I hope it is still easy to see, if not I can try again. |

| I can only speak from my own experience, but mine has gotten into fleas before even while using Advantix and I have never seen bites like that on her. Is it possible she ran into some of those huge ants you all have down there? I wish I could be of more help.

| I really don't know, what I killed didn't look like an ant. I just keep checking her to see if there are more, I haven't seen any, I just feel so bad because she has so many bites. I'm not sure what I can do to make her more comfortable, maybe a trip to the vets tomorrow is in store. |

| London had a rash similar to that at one point, the spots were a little smaller though. The vet said it was probably a spider/bug bite and it gave her an allergic reaction. She had me give her Benadryl and she was normal in a few days. You said that you found a bug on her so maybe it's the same thing? If she isn't uncomfortable I wouldn't worry too much. If it changes or is bothering her though, take her to the vet. It doesn't look like flea bites to me, London had those once, ugh.

| It looks like fleas to me. My female has the same reaction to fleas: she also gets bitten on her stomach and those bites become a little sore/blister because she scratches and bites them. Fleas don't bite me at all, so the best way for me to determine if we have a flea problem is to look at June's tummy. To really know if she has fleas, comb her out with a flea comb and put any hair and debris that gets onto the comb on a paper towel. If there are tiny black specks of dirt, wet them... if it turns red or a rusty brown, it's flea dirt... and she has fleas. I use Revolution for cats on my Yorkies to help with fleas and it works amazingly. It's a bit more expensive, but my vet recommended it after nothing else worked. I prefer to use natural remedies though, so I only use Revolution in extreme cases or during the flea season. Otherwise, I use eucalyptus oil in their shampoo and spray an eucalyptus-oil-and-water mixture all over the house.

| thank you so much for your help. Last night I was investigating some more and I believe she does have fleas. I only found a few on her but decided late last night to wash her with dawn, which I heard works. Have not seen any more fleas but I'm debating getting some advantage or topical treatment just to make sure they are gone. I really dislike chemicals but I don't know what else to do just to make sure they are gone. |

| I don't know about Dawn helping with fleas, but apparently it kills them instantly. That's awesome! Wish we had that in SA. To make sure that she doesn't have fleas anymore, you need to treat your whole house and garden. There are different natural ways to do this: you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth, you can spray a mixture of eucalyptus-oil-and-water or you can make lemon water which is then used to wash your floors, etc. I think the instructions for making lemon water are on YT somewhere, but I have the recipe if you want it. Personally, I wouldn't put any more chemicals on her if I had a choice. If it were me, I'd treat the house and then see how things go. You can always use Advantage when the natural things don't help, but try the natural remedies first... and keep checking her for fleas.

| I have always been told that fleas hate the smell of lavender. I don't know how true it is. But they make deodorant sprays for dogs scented lavender. I use the spray on Ollie's bed just in case he picks a few fleas up... hopefully it helps keep them off of him!!

| I am going through the same thing with Lucky...although, he don't have any marks on him but I did kill 2 fleas. I spotted them the same as you too, while rubbing their bellie. I seen 1 run towards his bum. I know Lucky prolly caught his from another dog. Either way, I'm trying to get rid of them also! I've tried Dawn and it do kill them, but not the eggs!! Two days ago I seen a flea by his ear while I was combing him out :eek So now I just called a vet and I'm going to buy the Advantage....it's costly a little but I think it's inevitable if I want to keep the fleas away.....Hoping you have some luck with Sophie.....
