| My Betty Boop gets her teeth brushed about 3 times a week. She has never been too resistant to the idea of getting them brushed. She would rather not, though! She has perfectly white teeth with no plaque....yet. I've also read somewhere that the most important place to brush is between their gum and teeth where more bacteria gets trapped, although I brush both sides. Why not try giving your baby a treat when he opens his mouth and you put the brush inside. Only give it to him when he complies. Take baby steps with him and be consistent. I've had success with training mine to do ALMOST whatever I want her to do because she knows she will get a Cheerio afterwards. If yours likes Cheerios, he'll probably be somewhat compliant, once he learns what you want him to do. I use the very small toothbrush that pet stores sell with their toothpaste (in a package). There is a large brush on one end and a small one on the other end. I suppose a soft baby toothbrush would work. I don't see why not. There are a couple of different flavors of pet toothpaste. Mine likes the poultry the best. She sort of likes the peanut flavor, too. Just don't use human toothpaste!! After I brush her teeth, she always wants to drink of water. Guess they have to rinse, too.

| With Ivan we just use these all natural dental chew sticks and it seems to work all right. But we still need to remove tartar. Does anyone know if a groomer can also clean a Yorkie's teeth?

There are some places in California, Florida, and Georgia that have a dental cleaning process without anesthsia and they have a method of testing or working with your animal to see if they are a candidate. I wish we had those here in Indy, but so far we haven't found any. We do a full dental once a year and brush 3 times a week. | |

| I use and extra soft childrens toothbrush with poultry flavored dog toothpaste. For difficult dogs I like the teeth cleaning pads (target sells them pet section)I do however rinse the pads off because the cleaning solution is strong smelling and they don't like the smell. I like those because you can wrap them around your index finger, they are soft, and my dog was more accepting of this method. Just put the dog toothpaste right on the pad. You may be able to slowly get your use to teeth cleaning that way. I found the dog toothbrushes and finger tip cleaners were to big and the bristles to hard for their little mouths too. |

| I used a child's toothbrush and he does not like it at all!! So I have better luck with a wet washcloth over my finger and rub it along his teeth. I guess it's better than nothing at all! My friend's groomer cleans her dog's teeth but I don't think it would be as good as having a medical professional do it. |

| I had a regular brush but was not having any luck with them keeping mouth open to use it. I bought the finger brushes, you just slip on over your index finger and brush away. It works best for me, but does not have as long of bristles to get between teeth as good as a regular brush. Sort of a toss up. I try to give mine lots to chew and only use the dry dog food. Still I had one of mine with bad teeth. They all get the same food and treatment and all of mine had good tetth but one, so I think some yorkies are just more prone to teeth problems. Genetics? I am thinking of going to the Spray that helps prevent tartar to see if that helps.

| I use to brush Sophie's teeth three times a week with a soft toothbrush, at first she did not like it but she was getting to where she did not mind it. Scooter is just getting started with this and the first time he freaked out but he is getting really good about letting me brush his teeth |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I brush Taycie's 2twice a day. I used everything under the sun and finally went with a baby tooth brush I think its for 9 to 24 months. Works wonderfully. Taycie does not like it at ALL and she goes to her bed when I pull out the brush but she gets over it quickly. The biggest thing I noticed to get her used to it was staying consistent. She really hated it in the begining but I hated it more! It was so hard and she would hardly let me put my finger in her mouth let alone a toothbrush. I actually started using a q-tip and then worked up to a toothbrush. As much as she still hates it now she will sit quitley and let me scrub the heck out of her teeth! I was using chicken flavored toothpaste but she hated it, strange I know. We now use the Oxyfresh Pet system and she tolerates it,lol, but I LOVE it! |
