Overweight or Normal ?? My Yorkie is 5 yrs old and always fluctuates between 11-12 lbs. The vet tells me she should be no more than 7lbs. I keep feeding her 1/4 cup of dry food twice a day...and only give her vet recommended treats once a day ..and she gets 2 walks a day....but nothing really changes with her weight. Are there larger Yorkies out there like mine ??? |
It would depend on her build. How long her legs are, how long she is, etc. But if your vet says she is carrying too much weight, I would listen. You should easily be able to feel her ribs. Can you? |

Has she had a thyroid panel done? Dogs who have low thyroid function tend to be overweight and have difficulty losing weight. |
3 Attachment(s) I'd have to see a photo to determine if he was overweight or not, but there are plenty of larger Yorkies. Jackson is 15lbs but in perfect health. He eats the same amount of dry food (1/2 cup per day). Here he is: |

As Brit said, perhaps you could post a pic and we could see? There are lots of bigger yorkies that are not overweight.:) I forgot to welcome you to YT, so welcome to YT.:D |
Sorry it took me awhile to get back .....I will try and post pics tonight ..thank you for your help. I just want to figure out if she is really..badly overweight or just a little overweight or not at all....by the way, I did have a thyroid panel done and she is fine plus she has been on vet dry food - calorie control & high fiber. |
Personally I know it's stressful to worry about their weight. My little man is approx a pound and a half overweight. Add in bad knees and it drives me crazy. I wish I could do more to help control his weight. |
Paris is good at 12 lbs he's not a tiny Yorkie. |
Someone my friend works with has a 20 lb yorkie reason being the owner feeds her everything and anything. The dog is 15 years old and is as healthy as can be except for the normal aging problems so I guess she's doing something right. |

Here is a quick read to help determine if your pet is overweight: How to Tell if Your Pet is Overweight It explains to look for the waist, "tuck" and rib cage. I had to go to the 4th site about how to determine if a dog is overweight before I found one without specifically WRONG info on yorkies. Some said they should be an average of 8 pounds and another had teacups, toy, minature, and standard listed. Too much bad info onlin especially about yorkies. |
Thank you for the responses... I was trying to figure out how to post a picture on the site..hopefully I will get it right and then you all can see her. She has always been bigger/longer than a teeny tiny Yorkie. |
Mocha fluctuates between 14 and 15 pounds. He's very healthy and gets plenty of exercise and I can feel his ribs. He's just more for me to love! |
