| carrots I've read posts before that carrots are ok for our babies, I'm wondering how much per day they can have, as well as the size you all cut them (I'm really nervous with carrots with the horses as they are the same width as a horses wind pipe). So Harley is 3lbs. he eats about 1/4-1/2 cup a day of dog food. I hope he likes them, I'm trying to find a healthy affordable treat to use when we go for walks. Right now he's eating jerky treats and they cost a fortune, and his salmon is too wet and gooey to walk with. (btw both of these treats are feed in moderation...)

| well i just gave him a little piece and he loved it... but it took him forever to eat the tiny piece... if i want to use it while we're walking and training, is it better to cook them and refrigerate them... then they are softer... an article i just read said that if they are cooked they have more nutrients...

The falcarinol, an anti-cancer element, as well as beta-carotene are both in carrots. However the carrot has extremely touch cellular walls which does not allow for digestion of these too easily. By cooking them, (or juicing) especially steaming or boiling you break the cellular walls allowing the the easy break down of these two. The only drawback is that by cooking them you destroy the vitamin C. I give them as treats as well, like you said small bits. | |

No Longer a Member | I thought cooking veggies made you loose some of the nutrients...? But if you cook them using the steam method they retain more nutrients, but will still loose the heat sensitive ones...I don't know, maybe there is a nutritionalist on YT? |

| I buy a bag of those fresh baby carrots from time to time. Beamer and Lil Bit love one of those as a treat from time to time.

| It depends on the vegetable. Carrots are one of those, that while cooking does render some of the falcarinol and beta carotene unusable , it also unlocks the ability to access more by our digestive tracts by the break down of the cell wall. Last edited by lil fu fu girl; 10-18-2010 at 05:52 AM. |

| My pup has a hard time with the raw carrots, so I get the sliced canned carrots and rinse them off real good. Then I give her 2 of the pre-sliced pieces twice a day with her food. She loves them! I'm guessing the serving size she gets is about 1-2 baby carrots.

| This is great... I'm gonna try cooking some small pieces and see if he likes those, then I'll just get a tiny container to keep in my pocket while we're walking.
