| just found out my dog have flee/ticks what is the best brand to get rid of them quick.. my mom pick him up and say there is a bug crawling on him butt. and we saw bite scars all over him.. i though i saw dirt ( eggs) but i was tiny little black eggs , i found this out over google, so we gave him bath everyday now. and still bugs over him. i also got rid of all his toys, beg, pillows. i just spend 3 hours looking over his body , butt is the area where most of the bite are at,, i have not found any bugs nor eggs, but he is still scratching like crazy.. we are not dirty people, we give him 2 baths every week, it might be the garden we go to at night time, there is alot of bugs there. |

| The cleanest of people can still get fleas in their houses. It's just life. Get something from the vet. Over the counter flea medications are generally not as safe. No need to get rid of his stuff. Washing in hot water and allowing him around them (with the medication between his shoulders) will kill them.

| I would definitely go to the vet. They can give you meds that will help greatly. Then make sure you keep vacuuming! Good luck |

| The only thing that works for Rosie is K9 Advantix. You can buy it from the vet or Petco. Good luck

| i just look over his back.. the situation is bad, there is some bite marks the back too and the skin seems flaky , he's not itching like before but still i hate to bring him to my vet, that guy does not help at all. last time the vet didn't know what problem my dog was having and just basically said let me try it and see what happens,. and o yeah the bill is $1700 for trying.. i might go in and ask for some pill or go to counter and buy frontline ( my dog is 3 years old and i never use any pills or anything to prevent bugs ) this is my first time, Last edited by wr332; 10-16-2010 at 08:01 PM. |

| Until you can get something, you might try using some dishwashing liquid. I heard Joy dishwashing liquid will kill fleas. But I don't know about the ticks. Do you have a farmers coop or anything around? Or a Petco? Both of them will carry flea and tick meds if you don't want to go to your vet. Also, I would recommend finding a new vet if you don't trust the one you have.

| If bathing, just hold his head so he can't lick. Not all dishwashing detergent would be perfectly safe. Dawn Original is ok. You would just be killing the ones crawling on him though. It does not kill eggs. You should not need a vet appointment if you're sure it's fleas. Most will sell it to you without. Frontline is fine to try. Yes, chemicals can be harmful, but personally I'd rather put chemicals on my dog than have her uncomfortable and an infestation in my house.

| I second the idea to shampoo thoroughly with the Dawn dishwashing liquid and comb with flea comb. Do this two days in a row then skip a few days and do it two more days in a row. That will get the newly hatched eggs. But with this many, you definately are going to need some med along with this treatment. I don't like using chemicals if I can help it but if mine get fleas, then I would go back to using Frontline Plus for a while. I shampoo mine with Minksheen shampoo for dogs -- it has natural pesticides in it. That is all I have used for over a year and no fleas. So, I would also highly recommend that for weekly or bi-weekly use. Have you checked your carpets? Sometimes dogs will bring in fleas and they will multiply in the carpet. Vacuum thoroughly, emptying the vacuum after and disposing of the contents, and then steam clean carpets or have them done. You can also use Flea Stoppers powder on the carpet. It is safe for children & pets. Regular Borax can be sprinkled on the carpets, left overnight and then vacuumed off. Another thing to consider is fleas in your yard. If you have a lot of squirrels in your area, they may be bringing them into the yard. Most insecticides you use on your lawn are harmful to our pups, so keep them out of the yard for a few days after treatment if you use them. Lining your yard with cedar chips, planting eucalyptus and/or marigolds can also help. Some recommend diatamaceous earth. I do not like to use it as it can be harmful to our dogs lungs since they are so close to the ground. Some treat their yards with a mix of Borax, the diatomaceous earth and salt. I think this would work well IF you can keep your dogs away from the yard for a few days after treatment, at least til a good rain. I have used just the borax alone years ago and think it is great against fleas and safe. Make sure it is Borax (like the 20 Mule Team kind) not boric acid which would be a poison. Although fairly safe, even the Borax might irritate skin and eyes if your dog were to get into a bunch of it. So, sprinkle lightly.
