Natural toothpaste? I am looking for a natural or organic doggie toothpaste to use on our Yorkie. I've been just brushing with a dry toothbrush( no paste) for the past year but am still noticing a bit of fishy breath. Id like to stay clear of anything with either sugar or too many bad or chemically ingredients and find something that's as natural as possible since he can't spit out and will end up swallowing the whole thing. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks! |
I use Oxyfresh Pet Gel and Oral Hygiene Solution. Taycie started having some fishy smelling breath and since I started using it it went away. I found this product actually recommend by a yorkie breeder in NV and I thought I would give it a try. I really do love it and it works so well! You can add the Oral Hygiene Solution to the water or what I like to do because it is expensive and I like to get the most for my buck I bought a travel bottle with a pump and I just mist it directly in her mouth 2x a day along with brushing. Here is a link... Oxyfresh.com | Pet Care | Pet Gel I am not sure if this is what you might be looking for but check it out! It works WONDERFUL for us! |
Thanks for the recommendation. My dh had the idea of using a little bit of salt on a toothbrush on him instead of toothpaste. Has anyone tried this? Would this be safe? |
I use a drop or 2 of coconut oil... on my own too! I don't think salt would be safe daily, maybe a tiny bit of baking soda? |
I have read through some posts before when i was trying to figure out what products I wanted to use and I heard Baking Soda is not safe for their little stomachs... I am NOT exactly sure if this is true but I thought I would let you know. |

You can use baking soda although it can easily gag them. I'd much rather use real toothpaste. |
Coconut oil? That's intriguing. How is it working for you? Does it keep his teeth clean? Where did you get it? How did you think of it? I mentioned baking soda to dh but he doesn't like baking soda because it's a chemical. So he suggested salt. Why do you think salt might be harmful in the long run? |
I only use CET toothpaste - we like the vanilla mint flavor. You can google it and you will find it. |

I was worried about this as well. As I am extremly picky about what I use for Taycie. When I asked my vet about it she actually suprised me because she uses Oxyfresh for her pets as well. She assured me it was an outstanding product and completley safe for Taycie to use. I also made a call to the company. They also reasurred me stating they would never allow any ingredient in their products that may cause harmful side effects for human or pet. I truly feel safe using Oxyfresh and I wouldn't use it, if I felt it was harmful at all, no matter what my vet or the manufacturer said. So for now it works for us... |
I know you aren't keen on baking soda, but here is a recipe for organic toothpaste you can make yourself: The main ingredients of dog toothpaste include baking soda, salt and glycerin. In an airtight container, mix the following: 6 teaspoons of baking soda 1/3 teaspoon of salt 4 teaspoons of glycerin. If you are a vegetarian or vegan dog owner, you can opt for the glycerin that comes from plants. In addition to these ingredients, you can either mix in 2 teaspoons of organic, low-sodium beef broth or 2 teaspoons of peppermint extract. Or you could try to get this toothpaste: Triple Pet Natural Toothpaste for Dogs & Cats I've also read that pumpkin, eucalyptus oil and parsley helps... |
