| MY New 9 week old just will not eat - HELP!!!! Some of you may already know that I lost my little baby girl Candy recentlyd and to help me to cope with my grief a little better (which was extremely bad) my husband suggested we get another little Yorkie. We did, she is helping a little but I still have the longing in my stomach to hold my little baby Candy and just cannot bear the pain. I am trying really hard to be a new mummy to the little one and we are beginning to bond right now. She is 9 weeks old and she has been with us for about 8 days. Ever since she arrived she has hardly eaten anything at all. For about the first 3 days I persevered and just kept giving her food to her and hoped for the best but after three days I decided to see if she would try something else, it turned out to be just the same. She will literally pick a piece up in her mouth and swallow it but that will be all she will eat. She is eating a few little treats but even then she is really fussy. My baby Candy would not eat any animal food all the 14 years that I had her. she would only eat cooked foods and sliced meats. I cannot believe that it may well happen to be over again. I did actually put the smallest amount of Chicken pieces in her food today to see if she would eat it but she would not. She ate a very tiny amount of dried cat bits. I am coming to the end of my tether as I am beginning to worry about it now and losing sleep. She is normal in every other way. She is obviously teething, she is playing well with her toys and running and jum ping about like she should be at this age. It is just that she will not eat. I have been giving her a small amount of Nutri-cal to keep her sugar levels up but that is all. She is drinking plenty. Does anybody have any ideas as I have tried everything now. If you can please help as I am really worried? Katie |

| Hi and congratulations on your new baby. Hoping in time you will bond with her and your memories of Candy will bring you some comfort. Now, as for the food. Obviously she needs some time to get used to her surroundings - but honestly 8 days should be enough. Are you giving her what the breeder was giving her? For now, do not give her any treats and see. Try putting the dry kibble in a little bowl, add a little water, put it in the microwave for a short amount of time so it becomes a little mushy, add a squirt of honey, and a small amount of chicken baby food. Add a few dry kibbles. Mix it all together and then try giving it to her. Some people I have heard of even sprinkling parmesan cheese on top. Anyway, she really should eat this. Slowly take out the baby food with each feeding. Then slowly add more kibble and less mushy kind till you are only giving her dry kibble. Good luck to you. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry about your loss of Candy and that you are having problems with your new little one. When I got Cali at 9 weeks she would not eat either and had a hypoglycemic attack on the 2nd day. I had to end up hand feeding her every 3-4 hours. The only dog food she would at was Cesar's canned which is like junk food for dogs, but I had to keep her eating.Maybe any canned food warmed a little will entice her. Once she was a little older, she turned into a little piggie and is always eating. She also had a parasite, coccidia and that contributed to her not eating. So if she hasn't had a stool sample checked you may want to do that.

| dogs can't resist green tripe ; you can add a teaspoon of canned green tripe from solid gold; they sell it at petco. just mix a teaspoon in with the food and she should eat all the food. which food are u feeding., puppies do well on wet food; try welness simple solution salmon and rice or lamb and rice; and u can always add some canned green tripe to entice the appetite. good luck

| Has she been to your the vet yet? How about the breeders? Was her stool tested for parasites? Did she get her puppy shot right before coming to you? Have you called the breeder? I would suggest a stool sample first, like a poster had stated..coccidia and giardia both upset a pups tummy and makes them not want to eat. How much does this little baby weigh? 9 weeks is still a little young to be leaving the littermates and breeder in my opinion. But what is done is done. I personally recommend to all my new puppy mommas to keep them on the food that they were eating here. I tell them no treats and no people food for at least the first 6 months. If they do not eat within 6 hours give them some kayro or nutrical (very tiny amount) and nothing more. Keep the food down and restrict their area till they eat. I also tell them to add a half a tsp of karyo to the water for the first week to make sure no blood sugar episodes happen. That and the nutrical 3 times a day will keep up the sugars. DO NOT GIVE IN is the key (unless the pup is sick) Watch for signs of low blood sugar but giving in will just have the pup repeat the behavior and then they learn to not eat the food. I am sure this pup was eating this food at the breeders and some just get stubborn. You have to keep perservering (sp?) watching the sugars of course. A tiny tsp of canned mixed completely on 10 -15 pieces of puppy food is fine but nothing more. If all else fails and they do not eat solid food in 2 days I have them bring the pup back to me and see if it is just situational. I can tell you in the 4-5 times that has happened that each one of those pups starting eating here within 24 hours of being offered nothing more than what they started here on. Good luck PS so sorry about your Candy. This pup will not replace her but hopefully will make new memories that will begin to fill that hole in your heart.

| I had the same problem with Zach when we got him. He wouldn't eat. We tried every dog food on the market. We even put chicken on his food but he wouldn't eat. When we hand fed him he ate a little. The breeder fed him health extension dry and canned food but he wouldn't touch that at all. My vet suggested we sprinkle a little grated Italian cheese on the food and alas it worked. Now he eats very well without the cheese. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | This sounds like my Izzy for the moment we got a=her at 13 weeks old till about 2 months ago.... We tried EVERY kind of wet, dry, food roll food under the sun..really.. we even tried BABY food...although out of all of them we had the best luck with wet food... she ate Natural Balance venison and sweet potato but only about 1 tablespoon at a time...sometimes she would eat more. Then that got old and we went to the Food roll that natural Balance made...kind of like sausage for dogs... she liked that for while... then we went to Wellness... that was "ok" but didnt last long..lol Finally I took the plunge and tried the RAW dog foods... SHE LOVED IT!!! She's been on it for about since end of July and she still loves it... Right now we are on Natures Variety because the one i want is not sold anywhere near me... Which is Primal....but for now Natures Variety is fine... they have lots of different flavors so we switch it up every time she needs a new bag. I really recommend feeding RAW...Her coat is beautiful and she's at a good weight...and i know she's eating. That itself is worth it. Good luck!!!

| See if she will eat cottage cheese or yogurt. Maybe her mouth hurts, you never know. I would have a through vet check insluding her mouth and teeth. I was lucky and never had a problem with my little guy. He came right in and started eating right away. They are all different, just like people. I had to throw hard food one piece at a time at one point as he wanted to play with each piece before he ate it. |
