| Tape worms?!!! :( help! My baby Lola is sitting on Lap asleep right now... just a few minutes ago, i felt something wet on my leg.... i immediatly looked down and saw a tiny white slimy "worm like" thing (which i'm assuming came out of my baby's bottom) She was recently at the vet, so i am not sure why this wasnt caught I immediatly googled this, & found that it is most likely a "tape worm." CAN SOMEONE HELP ME? She hasnt had diarhea or any vomiting so i had NO clue. --she has NO symptoms. i am really scared. It is too late for me to take her to the Vet, & her vet isnt open until Monday. I read something called "tape worm tabs" that you can get at petsmart to rid them, does anyone have any info? HELP PLEASE

| I understand your concern. This past week I took Ben to the vet to make sure he was all clear. I had seen something in his stool...but after going thru the test I found out it was dried grass. Please do not worry, I just went thru this same stress and it is not fun. But she will be okay if she is anything like my little guy. In the meanwhile get a sample of her bowel movement put it in a baggie. Maybe do it on Sunday or Monday morning so they do not have to get it from her. They will take the sample run a 15 min test. If she has any, they will prescribe the meds for you then. It was a few days before I was able to get into a vet as well. I thought about doing a over the counter remedy... But chose to go to the vet when they were available instead of trying to second guess and get a remedy on my own. Ben had had all of his tests too, but we had visited a doggy park and I thought the grass I saw was worms. So good to just get the test done to make sure. You have a wonderful weekend...now if it gets to the point where you just absolutely cannot wait please know...some vets are open until noon on Saturday's I hope this helps. | My little guy had tapeworms too. I asked my vet how he could've gotten them because I don't have any fleas. And my grown dogs don't have any worms. They can pick them up from other dogs feces. He said the eggs hatch every 10 days. They can be in the grass and if you're not careful they can lay eggs in the carpet. The worms usually don't come out until the puppy is sleeping. So, you just have to put your puppy in his/her crate for sleepy time. He was allowed to play with other dogs, but I had to make sure he didn't have any accidents on the rug. I couldn't take him outside to poop either. The other dogs had to kept far away from his feces. So if you have a room with a hard floor put him in there. The vet gave him a pill for tapeworms and he went back for another dose 10 days later. He hasn't had any since then. I found this website it might help. Tapeworms of Dogs |

| Don't worry, this isn't an emergency. Just collect a stool sample in a baggie, or, better yet, one of the worm segments and bring it into the vet on Monday. They will either give Lola a pill or an injection, and it will all be history. In the grand scheme of things, this is on the minor side and very easily treated. There are two types of tapeworms. One kind they get from eating an infected animal, perhaps a rodent. This kind of tapeworm can be treated with the over-the-counter meds at PetsMart. The second (and much more common type) is caught when they ingest an infected flea. You need to go to the vet to get the pills or injection to cure this type. You can't catch it directly from Lola, nor can you other dogs, because the segments you see cannot directly infect ... after they are passed they must go through a flea again as part of their life cycle. You would also have to ingest an infected flea (yuck!) in order to get tapeworms.
