| My yorkie is losing hair on his paws HELP! Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this site but i've been reading the threads and post to get info since I got my little guy almost two years ago. His name is Rambo and until recently he has been very healthy. I noticed a rash if you will on his belly as well has hair loss on his paws due to him licking them all day long. I am out of town for a few months and the vet here told me that it was due to some type of allergy and gave me a spray to put on his paws and belly once a day. However the spray hasn't stopped him from chewing on his poor feet. The vet also told me that he could be allergic to a number of things including his food, something in the grass or dust... thats a broad list and im stressed out for him and feel awful cause there is nothing i can do. Has anyone had this happen to their yorkie and if so what did u do PLEASE HELP.. he's my only baby and i cant stand to see him not 100% healthy, THANKSSSS |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This does sound like allergies. Things to think about are: did they start this spring/summer? did they start after a food change? It's important to try to give some relief to the symptoms bc frequent licking/chewing of paws can lead to very sore paw, and even infection. For relief, the options are OTC anti-hists, Temaril-P, steroid shots (for potential immediate relief), and Atopica. The tough part is figuring out whether it's food or enviro, however, food allergies happen only about 10-15% of the time - so, it's most likely enviro. No matter what the allergy, it's good to have an allergy-dog on a good, grain-free diet, if possible. You want to avoid food allergens, even if he only has enviro allergies right now. Bc once the immune system is hyperactive (ie, enviro allergies), it becomes much more vulnerable to becoming sensitive to other substances. Here is a great site, and I think it outlines how to approach allergies just wonderfully: Pet Care Library: Allergies in Dogs
