| My yorkie puppy has diarrhea and mucous. Should i take him to the vet? Hey all, i need your advice on taking my puppy to the vet or not? He has been having diarrhea with mucus all weekend long at night. I was getting up every 2 hours to let me go the bathroom. He usually sleeps through the night. He started having it on Friday and i thought it was because he ate a lot of grass on Thursday while i was walking him. And it also looked like he was getting better. then on Saturday night he woke me up at midnight and had to go again every 2 hours..diarrhea and mucus again....then i remembered that i had given him a new brand of raw hide on Friday and Saturday to shew on and did a little research online...found out that there is some kind of dental coating on it and a lot of other dogs were having the same problem because of it. So yesterday (sunday) i got rid of the raw hide and was feeding Freddy white rice and chicken (read it on YT). He did not go poop all day and woke me up again starting 11:30 pm every hour to go to the bathroom. He has very loose stool (almost diarriah) and a lot of mucus in it. He seems fine otherwise, eating , drinking, playing.... I took the day off work today to stay home with him...didn't want to leave a sick puppy home alone all day. Now i am thinking about calling the vet...i don't want freddy and myself to go though the same thing again tonight...but am not sure if calling the vet is too much? What would you do? |

| I would call the vet for sure! You have a puppy and they can go downhill so fast. So I would for sure call and take him in! Please keep us posted, I hope everything is ok!

| It is always better to be cautious when it comes to these little ones and especially a puppy. Please get him into the vet today and let us know what they say. BTW~you are not that far from me. Welcome to YT!

| That condition is something serious. I would suggest you call the vet right away. He knows best. I hope he gets well soon and please do not forget to update us with what the vet said.

| Okay, I did take him to the vet and they didn't find anything. I brought a stool sample...everything is ok. Said that his stomach is just upset. (probably from that dental raw hide) Gave me some prescription food for him, which is pretty much only white rice and turkey. I know that it was better to take him in but that visit cost me almost $200... And the pet exam itself was free...imagine that! Anyways..i am relived that he will be fine!! thanks for the advice guys! |

Anyway, glad to hear that your pet is okay. I was going to suggest pepto-bismol (or plain yogurt) to coat his tummy because you don't want him to get dehydrated - but glad all is well. It will probably take a couple of days for him to get back to normal. Puppies systems are very delicate and the slightest thing can set them off - so changes to their diet have to be done very slowly.

| Milli gets an upset stomach fairly often and when they test the stool samples, they say that it's just 'increased bacteria' due to stress or drinking water she's not used to or something. Someone here recently recommended probiotics - a product called Forti-Flora. You can get it through a vet...but I think it's cheaper elsewhere. It's a powder form of probiotics that you can sprinkle on their food. We've been using it on Skye and Milli for a couple weeks now (off and on, whenever we think they'll have trouble) and they've been diarrhea free! It's really working well. It might be worth trying. |

| @Cally930: i have to admit, i asked them for more than just the stool sample testing...but still... Here is the break down of my bill today: fecal test $25, gave him a shot to calm his tummy ($40), looked at his ears ($20), siad he has a slight ear infection and gave me drops for that ($40), trimmed his nails ($15) and the prescription food was like $55 for 10 days. I thought that vet shows you how to trim the nails for free... i didn't go to the first vet that i took him to when i first got him because that vet is a little father away..but the first pet visit at the other vet was $200 and that was the exam, 4 shots, heartguard and flea medice (6 months worth).. |

| Freddy_SW, that was expensive! I was shocked when you said the ear inspection was $20... Do you know the vet personally? I was a victim of an opportunist veterinarian in my area. He said my dog needed some vitamins and those vitamins can only be bought in his clinic. Later did I found that the medicine is not really necessary in my dog's diet. So I never returned in that vet. Anyway, the most important thing is your dog is just fine. I see myself on you. I would do anything for my dog to be in good condition.

| ally173: Yes, you are right they did the Giardia Test..but i don't even know what that is... I posted a mistake on the price of the food....the food was not that expensive. It was the Giardia test for $30 and the food was $25. they gave me 3 cans of Canine I/D and 10 packets of the FortiFlora. So i guess if you look at everything they did..the visit wasn't THAT bad. Oh well...he still didn't poop today and i am waiting to see if anything changed already |

I would think that the test came back neg. like you said they didn't put him on any meds. I am switching food right now. So he is getting half of IAM smart puppy and half of Blue Bufallo. But i am sure that it wasn't because of the food switch, i started switching 9 days ago and he was fine. Still waiting....just came back from a looong walk...he has so much energy...but still no poop. really hope that it will not be the same as yesterday, when he didn't go until about midnight and then it was diarhea.
