| Flea Treatment Reaction Our Rocky has had reactions to 2 different brands and at this point we are considering not trying or using any more treatments. I just don't know what to do , specially after reading about so many serious reactions , even deaths associated to flea treatments that the FDA is investigating. He gets into a panic mode, walks around in circles with tail down, as if he is afraid (similar to what he does when we have bad storms). First couple of times he would be breathing really fast, rolling on the floor like when we give him a bath, basically acted very strange for about four hours. The last time the vet suggested a new brand and to only use half the dose , that time he acted differently, he was sleepy, not as panicky as other times, but we worried because he was too calm. We live in Georgia and know that fleas are a big problem but he is always indoors, only near other dogs when we go to PetSmart to get his nails trimmed. |

| May I ask which brands it is you've tried? I know some "over-the-counter" brands like you'd get at Petsmart are very dangerous. Biospot for one is known to have caused seizures and death in many small animals. I've been using Frontline for years without any problems, but I know each dog is different.

| First Shield has permethrin which is usually not a good idea for sensitive pups. I'd try Advantage. If that doesn't work, I'd bile acids test to make sure the liver is okay. Should not see three reactions from three drugs... Advantage would be for fleas only. Advantix covers ticks, but also contains permethrin.

| Better without I live in GA also and I, as well as my other relatives with Yorkies, don't use any flea treatments and we have had no problem with fleas. Like you say they are mostly in the house and unless you have other pets bringing them in you will probably not have any problems either. Also, you can get your yard treated which is safer. Good Luck |

| i just visited a friend in Georgia, and my sweet girl came back with fleas also. Georgia must have an epidemic. We went and got her a pill and some K9 Advantix to use after she gets dirty again. Should we use a 1/2 a dose? Has anyone had strange reactions to this?

I agree, go without if your pup is mostly indoors. I live in FL and my last Yorkie never had an issue. Dudley has them after being at a Dog beach!! I still do not give him flea treatment, if he gets them again I'll do the same as before...Dawn dish detergent

| Fleas are our only issue, and we never had them before our visit. My sweet friend has too big of a heart, and has many dogs and cats. We gave ours a Capstar pill a few hours ago; all is well so far. Since we didn't get them from here, will the Capstar pill be enough?

We are putting way to many chemicals into these little guys. Rabbies is the only vaccine that needs to be done routinely. Most places have gone to the 3 year vaccines on that. Other vaccinations every 5 to 10 years. Fleas, tics, worms, mosquitoes, only when needed. I think it has gottenm so the preventions are far more dangerous than the illnesses they are preventing. | |
