| Distemper I have had Chance for a little over a month now. We don't know his age, a guess was 5-7 yrs. I took him to the vet last month, and since we had no idea of his vaccination background she said he needed rabies and distemper. He has had his rabies, and one distemper. He is due for his second distemper soon. She said if he's going to have a reaction it would be with this second one. I am getting really nervous about it. I have had Madison since she was a pup, she was always on the larger side (she's 14lbs now) so I didn't worry as much. She never had any kind of reactions to any of her vaccines. Chance is only 6lbs, I don't know if he has ever had any vaccinations, and if he did, did he have any reactions to them. Has anyone's baby ever had a bad reaction to the distemper? Thanks!!

| Yes, there are a few who react to distemper. Since you don't know the vaccine history, they one given a month ago could have been his second or third or eighth or... Immediate and serious reactions are not common after DHPP alone. You can talk to the vet about premedicating with Benadryl if you want. some will say go for it. Others don't like to. Just watch him close for the rest of the day, keep Benadryl and the ER number on hand, and stay near the vet's office for the first 1/2 hour or so (this goes for all vaccines given to all dogs, imo). It should be fine.

| Was he neutered when you got him? If he was, chances are he has had vaccines in his past. When I take an adult dog to my vet with an unknown history, my vet gives one DHPP...she does not repeat it one month later. It is then given the following year and then every three years. I would do some research about this. See what Dr. Dodds suggests...also take a look at the AAHA recommendations.

| If I had to guess, I would say this may be his first. He was a stud locked in a cage, in a shed most if not all his life I can't imagine they would "waste" money on that kind of thing. When he had the other two, he didn't have any reactions to them except to sleep a little more, so hopefully he will be fine! Thank you so much!!

| Dr. Schultz has been quoted saying he gives his dogs one vaccine and then in another spot, he says one or two. If that one given did not take for whatever reason, then there could be a problem. So you could titer instead...

| I don't have time to go over these recommendations right now...I would review them to see what they recommend for adult dogs that come to shelters or who have no history. http://www.aahanet.org/PublicDocumen...s06Revised.pdf

| When I speak with my vet again, I am going to ask about this. I believe she may have explained it some time ago and I forgot. I just know that she never repeats them in a month. I have had many adult dogs go through my home and it was never done. It is not like a puppy getting core vaccines. I have to get out of the house or I would do more reading. I am very curious now myself.
