| Bella my 9 week old Yorkie Hi all my name is Marsha and I am new to the sight.I just took my Bella to vet yesterday and she had a yeast infection in her ears. Is this normal for a pup? Also she is eating eukanuba puppy food and seems to be having several bowel movements. Is that normal? What do you feed your pups. She weighs 2 lbs. at 9 weeks her dad weighed 2.6 lbs. and her mother weighed 6 lbs. does anyone have any idea how big she will get? She has not had all of her shots and I am using a playpen with a piddle pad and a crate at night. I have had her for three day she is going on the piddle pad, but she can't go outside until she has all of her shots. Do you think that's going to make it hard to train her when the time comes? Well as you can see I have never owned a yorkie and I have tons of questions. Any advice from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks! Marsha |

| Welcome to YT Marsha! I'll start off by saying that at 9 weeks your baby should still be with her mommy & littermates. Going to the bathroom several times a day is normal. As long as it's neither very hard or very loose she should be fine. Did the vet do a fecal test? Should have...If you notice stools that are very loose, take her in to have one done to rule out parasites. I've never dealt with a yeast infection in the ears, so I can't help you there. Are her ears standing up yet? I know sometimes if they are not standing, it can cause infection so you have to be sure to keep them clean & dry. Also, you may want to check out the stickies on this forum...very useful information & may help you out with any issues you may run into... especially b/c your baby is too young to be away from her mom. Many find that their baby didn't learn bite inhibition if they left mom too early. Just trying to help you prepare yourself. Good luck!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Welcome to YT! Yeast infections in the ears are common, but definitely not "normal". Yeast is an opportunistic infection- you get an over growth of it when the immune system is out of whack due to poor nutrition, hormone imbalances, food allergies and a whole host of other things. Stress, such as going from her littermates to a new home can also cause a flare up. Scrupulous ear hygiene and medication from the vet can help stem a mild infection. Yeast likes warm, damp places to multiply. Weight: there are multiple charts on the net that will try and guestimate the adult weight of a yorkie, but they are just that- guesses. It really requires knowing the weights of at least 3 generations of lineage to give you a good idea, and even then, there will be the odd larger/smaller than usual pup. One of the formulas for the guestimates is double the weight @ 12 weeks and add another pound. Food: I'm partial to Blue Buffalo Small Breed Puppy. Check out the diet and nutrition thread for lots of discussion on what works for others. I'm sure someone will come along and help you with the potty training question. I'm getting ready to transition from piddle pad to grass, so I look forward to seeing what they tell you.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I brought my bella home at 8 and half weeks and had nothing but trouble because i brought her home too soon. The advice I would give to you is that you need to make sure your little bells doesn't suffer from hypoglycemia. Always have nutrical around to give to your little pup in case her sugar levels drop. I almost lost bella when she was 9 and half weeks because she suffered from that. So just a little advice from another Bella mommy Congrats, they are a lot of work but worth every second I promise!

| Bella my nine week old Yorkie Bella is pooping and peeing everywhere, I have a playpen for her during the day and a crate at night. I have to keep bathing her she gets poop everywhere. Last night was the worst night she cried all night. She had pooped in her crate. Then she pooped all over her playpen. She is very difficut to hold she is very squirmy and bites constantly. I went to a holistic dog food store. I bought this special food and she told me to mix it with her eukanuba with this natural probiotic. I think that made her much worse that's why she cried all night and had a very runny stool. I cannot hold her 24/7 I am at a loss. Yes her ears are up, but one seems to be flopping. The vet said her fecal test was good, but had me worm her again just in case. Any kind of training at this point seems to be impossible. Very worried mom don't know what to do. Marsha |

Teaching Bite Inhibition - Whole Dog Journal Article As for the potty training, just remember to be patient as Bella is still very young. In the training section of YT, there are some good stickies about potty training that may help you. I'm not sure if giving the worming meds would cause loose stools or not, but you should contact your vet to let them know she is now having loose stools. Little ones can dehydrate very quickly. How is she eating? Drinking water? Is she playful or lethargic? I really hope things improve for you & little Bella.

| I wanted to add this link as well. This is very useful to read. You'll notice that 8-12 weeks is a very crucial time for your baby...hence the reason it is recommended for puppies to still be with mom during this time. It just means it's going to be more work for you. Good luck! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...nt-stages.html

| Thanks so much for the replies. I talked to the breeder today and she gave me a lot of good information. I was giving her puppy treats when she went on her piddle pad, but the breeder told me not to give her anything, but her regular dog food. I can hand her that instead. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I really don't think you should be switching her food around at this age. She needs to stay on one food the first few months especially, remember she's just been weaned, and every time you switch foods you are going to have diarrhea and vomiting. Food changes are made very slowly. The others are correct, she should be with her mother, and her mother helps housebreak her as well as teaching her inhibition of the biting reflex. Don't be too concerned about pooping and peeing everywhere, just don't let her have the run of the house, and pee pad should always be within a few feet of her. I agree with your breeder, no snacks, and be wary of listening to people at pet/health stores, they have little training and are sales people. Best of luck!
