| Gas Issues - Switch Foods? I've read quite a few post on the gas issues and type of foods. Tobi is currently eating Solid Gold Hundenflocken Puppy (transitioned from Puppy Chow that the breader had him on - over about 3 weeks) and he has some pretty bad gas. I've just recently stopped adding the puppy chow to his food, don't see any difference in his stool or amount that he goes. He eats almost 1 1/2 - 2cups a day and drinks plenty of water. He does have some chew sticks that we got at the local groomers that are assorted, tendon, bone etc. Maybe this is the cause? I'm almost to the end of the bag and probably need to get him a new bag of food this weekend, should I switch him to Wellness or something else? Any suggestions on "no stinky" chew sticks for him? Thanks any suggestions! |

| Claire had awful stinky poops and gas that would run you off!! haha We switched her food from chicken soup to blue buffalo and it is not stinky at ALL now!! Her stool has firmed up more too (much easier to clean up from the yard!!) As far as non stinky chew things, the only ones Claire likes that are safe are stinky. Bully sticks are her fav and don't stink too bad. She was given a hoof from the breeder and it smells like a cow pasture!!! So we stick to bully sticks!

| Food Yes, you should switch the food. Mocha was having serious gas and stinky poop problems when he was on Blue Buffalo. But since everyone said BB is good and that the gas will go away, I tried for 2 bags...didn't help. I switched him to Orijen and he's good now. I think every dog reacts different food differently. You just have to try and see. I did notice that when I switch him from what the breeder fed him to premium food, he ate less. I thought he just does not like the new food. However, I saw a Q&A online with someone asking an expert if the cheaper dog foods have sugar or something since dogs seems to eat more. The answer was that the premium food has more good meat and protein so the dog gets full for less. Just thought to share this little bit of information. |

| Premium foods have more protein and more *calories*, so definitely feed less of it. Tobi: How much does Tobi weigh? 1 1/2 - 2 cups a day sounds like a lot of food for any brand food. Overfeeding can cause excessive/stinky gas and loose stools. Chew sticks can also do it. |

| Thanks for the comments. Tobi weighs between 6-7 lbs and is about 5 months old. Could it be the lamb? For a dog his age and weight he's eating the recommendation of serving that's on the bag. Gotta buy some new food tomorrow so maybe I'll switch to the wellness since it has chicken. Thanks for any more input. |

I'm still wondering about the recommended servings on the bag. The food you are feeding is 410 kcal/cup. That means your pup is eating up to 820 calories per day, plus treats. Every dog is different and has different needs. However, I can't help comparing to my very active 8.0 pound boy who has never eaten 400 calories in a single day, even when he was a pup. I think many dog food brands suggest feeding too much. Monitor Tobi's weight and make sure you can still feel his ribs. That is the best way to determine if the food is the right amount. | |

Definitely feed less. Don't always listen to the bag, they way over recommend. And each dog is different. My very active Jackson is 15lbs and eats 1/2 cup a day of food total. Occasionally 3/4 cup a day. Plus some treats throughout. I've never experienced any gas with him since I got him. Solid Gold is a pretty good food, so you're probably just overfeeding. But other good brands are Orijen and Acana, Fromm, Go!, Now!, Natures Variety, etc.

| Thanks for all the input! I noticed last night that the kids were still mixing a little of the puppy chow in his food(at least I know they listen, guess I forgot to tell them not too!) I'm going to cut his portions down and see how that works, really don't want to switch his food because he does like it. If this doesn't work I'll try the orijin, found a place close by that sells it, closer than the place I get solid gold! Thanks again this is a great site! |

But, lots of gas on the new food? If that's the case - compare the main protein sources of the 2 foods. Try avoiding the protein sources of food 2, and instead look for the same protein sources in food 1. May also want to just check the main carb sources also, as complicated carbs can be a source of gas for dogs (well, and even simple carbs can be...).

| Thanks again for all the input. I went to get my haircut this past weekend and it happens to be close by a store that specializes in all the great dog foods mentioned on this site. On a whim I took the advise from "Brit and Jackson" and bought a sample bag ($3 for 0.88lbs) of Orijen Puppy and mixed it with a little of the Solid Gold for Tobi. I had thought he liked the SG but he went crazy with the Orijen! I also cut the portions down and no gas issues anymore! I am completely sold on the Orijen since he can't wait to eat it now. Before he would let the SG sit in his bowl for awhile, but not the Orijen! The store I bought it from, Floppy Pets on Nasa Road 1 in Seabrook TX, has amazing prices, actually cheaper then the box stores selling the "premium" foods. I completely recommend anyone in that area stop by and look at all the premium food selections they have!! Just about everything mentioned on this site as good food they have! Thanks again |
