| I'm worried about Knox's baby teeth removal. Knox is a 4lb male yorkie. He is 8 months old. He has two rows of teeth on top and 8 total canine teeth. I have an appointment for Wednesday morning to have his remaining baby teeth extracted. I'm really worried about it. I don't want to have him neutered. I would love to breed him at least once. He's housebroken, doesn't hump, and is a happy, playful little dog. The vet really thinks I should neuter him while he's under, but I'm reluctant. I want to present my mom the gift of his little boy one day. If you have any experience with teeth removal, any suggestions would be appreciated. I assume he will need soft food for a few days. I suspect he will be pretty sick afterward too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| I would definitely suggesting neutering. Once he mates, he will NOT be your little non humping, non marking boy anymore.... so you can forget about that. Besides he's not fully matured yet so a lot of unneutered males won't start those habits until they are older. Also, do you know his pedigree, have you done extensive health testing to make sure he's able to produce sound puppies? So your mom wants ONE little boy, what about the other puppies? Every single day, thousands of dogs are being put down, why add to the population? In my opinion, neutering would be in his benefit but of course it's your choice. I really just think more research should be done and realize you probably won't have 'your little boy' anymore. He will be wanting to mate and looking for a female in heat, they can smell them from miles away. I believe 80% of dogs that are hit by cars are unaltered males (because they ran off looking for a female in heat and escaped). As for the teeth, yeah it's a common procedure! Jackson had 4 baby teeth removed and he was on pain meds after his neuter/tooth removal for 5days but I think he was eating crunchy food by the second day. If you're thinking you're ever going to get him neutered in the future, you might as well just do it now so he won't have to be put under twice. Having puppies should not be 'because you want to have one litter' or 'give a puppy to a family member'... those are some of the worst reasons to breed. I don't want to come off harsh and hope I am not, I just see far too often people coming here looking to breed their dogs and there's just no reason to. There's already plenty of reputable breeders who have put many years into breeding standard healthy Yorkies and we really don't need anymore breeders in my opinion. There is far too many homeless animals out there because of breedings such as this.

| My first yorkie had to have two teeth removed when she was spayed. They were so deeply rooted that she bled so badly that they had to bathe her as she was covered in blood. She had no problems otherwise, though. And I have the same thing coming up this Thursday. My pup is booked in to be spayed and (since I booked) 4 canines have burst through without the baby ones showing any sign at all of loosening so I'm sure they're going to have to come out as well while she's under anaesthetic. I've also told them I want her microchipped then as well as I wanted her to avoid feeling the pain so have put it off. I'm not looking forward to Thursday but I'm sure she'll be ok. I'll feel as guilty as hell that she'll be going through so much discomfort but I will keep telling myself that it is all for her benefit in the long run. I'll make sure she has some nice soft food for the first few days and she'll be fine...I'm sure.

| He already tries to escape... I've purchased gates for the front and back porch. He loves other dogs and doesn't realize how fragile he is. My neighbor has three pitbulls. He barks playfully at them. Knox is a male. If I were to breed him, isn't it common to get a free puppy for stud service? That was my hope anyway. Knox's dad won a lot of trophies at dog shows. I don't know if Knoxie is capable of reproducing or not. But I'd like to keep the door open until it becomes a major problem. I finally figured out how to post pictures of him, and posted them earlier in the pics forum. Last edited by volumnus; 07-05-2010 at 12:18 PM. |

| Yeah she's also gung ho about Science Diet... I canceled the appointment. I just read several stories about smaller yorkies like Knox who didn't lose their baby teeth until they were around a year old. I'll just keep brushing his teeth every other day, and if he still hasn't lost them in four months when I take him back for his checkup and heart worm pills, I'll have them extracted then. Perhaps by November, I will have bred him or feel more comfortable neutering him. |

| My two are nearly a year...in a few weeks. They are still losing their baby teeth. They each have one more to lose and the bully sticks are helping them come out. I heard that they can continue to lose teeth until 18 months.

| I agree, I would neuter your little guy too. Only breed if you are experienced...it's not like breeding guinea pigs where you just give a baby to all your friends and family. The boys are better off neutered...they stay sweet and loving their whole life. Help your mom find her own puppy. Maybe she can find a boy from a rescue in need of a loving home.

| Blue Sake was neutered last week. He also had his four baby canine teeth pulled and he's doing very well. His father is a champion. I don't pursue the breeding because I know there are many Yorkies in need of home and are being killed because there are too many Yorkies so little homes available. I don't want to contribute to the problem. It is your decision whether to neuter your dog or not but I hope we talk you out of breeding him and let your mom save a life by adopting a Yorkie. |
