| Puppy Food help or suggestions I am getting 2 puppies on the 17th. The breeder is giving me a Eukanuba pupppy pack for her. I have a Yorkie mix at home that eats Avoderm Adult Baked variety. I really want to start my puppies out on the best food for nutrition and overall health. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know they need high protein but I thought that I had read that it could not be too high or it could cause damage to their liver or something ( I can't remember the exact organ they listed). Thank you for your help.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | If you like Avoderm, see if they have a puppy formula or an all life stages formula so all your dogs can be on the same food. When mine was a puppy she ate wellness puppy and solid gold puppy, plus some pre-made raw from nature's variety (when she was between 6-12 months).

YT 1000 Club Member | Cruz's breeder gave me some chicken soup puppy food and California natural puppy. Well He really likes the California natural but unfortunately neither of the petstores near me carry it. So I bought the wellness puppy, one of the employees told me to keep my receipt and if he did not like it I could bring it back and exchange it for a different brand. So far he likes it and My pregnant female likes it to.

| Thank you. I did look today when I went to get food and was concerned that I would be giving them enough daily protein. The breeder sent me these couple of pics today. I just had to share.

| We really liked Wellness. We are currently on Acana which I believe is an ALS food, but they both did well on Wellness. |

| innova is good too, but Bandit didn't really like it. He is however, the world's pickiest eater lol. He ate it for a couple of months and then wouldn't eat it anymore. It's a good food though! |

| Just a forewarning: Innova (and their other lines) were bought out by Proctor & Gamble (Iams, etc) and many are NOT feeding it anymore. Most healthy pet food stores are discontinuing the line.

| Thank you everyone for suggestions on food. Does anyone know if there is any truth to the whole thing that Yorkies cannot eat the foods that are over 30 in protein. I want to make sure that they get enough protein but I do not want to tax their little systems.

I actually posted this on another thread so I'll just copy/paste: High protein causing problems is a myth. If the protein is coming from GOOD sources, (i.e. meat) then it's not a problem. If the high protein is coming from grains or vegetables mainly, then it could cause issues because the liver has to overwork to process those kind of proteins. High protein is only an issue if your dog already has liver problems, but even so, some people feed their liver comprised dogs raw food with no problems (I'm not advising this, just saying). Alot of puppy foods even have 30%+ protein (such as Royal Canin Mini 33). Dogs are carnivores and their bodies are designed to eat meat. Domestic dogs are taxonomically the same species, and physiologically and anatomically the same and actually share 99.8% of the same DNA as wolves. Size and appearance are in the less than .2% differences. Some dogs don't do well on high protein for one reason or the other but I really believe alot of peoples issues are over-feeding. With a higher protein, more calorie food, it's sooo easy to overfeed. If your dogs are not active, simply feed less. High protein is not bad for lazy dogs, carbs are. Jackson is 16lbs and eats 1/2 cup a day of Acana. Ultimately, though, I think it's what works best for you and your dog. I've done alot of research and have finally settled that this works best for Jackson! I will always recommend grain-free higher-ish protein content foods over grain filled low protein foods but that's just me, I'm no expert or qualified in any way. Through my research, I've determined this works best for us! Here is another great post from another YT user: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/3163277-post8.html Acana Grasslands has 33% protein and 17% fat. I also feed Go! Endurance which has 34% protein and 16% fat. For reference, a 50lb dog should be fed 1.75 - 2 cups of Go Endurance which has 470 kcal/cup.
