| sunburn?? I shaved down Bentley today because he had been scratching a lot(lower back), and i recently put some advantage on him and i didn't see any fleas. Once I starting shaving him his skin looked kind of pink and he seemed fine so didn't think too much about it.... Now that Im looking at him his skin does look pretty pink. He doesn't seem to be in pain?? If you touch his side as if to scratch him, he automatically gets that nerve reflex that kicks his foot. He stays outside during the day (our apartment looks west, so after about 12 noon the sun does not shine toward the apartment/patio) So Im wondering could his back possibly be sunburnt? Or maybe hot spots? About a week ago I mentioned that his back felt a little extra warm to me. |

If you are using a blade that makes his coat really really short then yes he can get sun burn. Also if you use a blade for a long period of time it heats up and can get really hot. You may be irritating his skin with the hot blade, and giving him clipper burn. You should always have two blades so that you can switch out when one gets hot so you don't run into that problem. Also a can of cooling lubricant helps as well (or a squirt or two of rubbing alcohol is you don't have coolant). the irritated skin can become a hot spot if he keeps scratching at it or licking/biting it. If his coat is really short or he is scratching a lot you should put a t-shirt on him to prevent him from injuring himself.

| his hair was already pretty long a few inches, today I shaved him with a 1. The guard on the shaver is made out of plastic so I don't think that burned him. This is the first time I've shaved him that low, normally I do finger width. could he get sunburnt if his hair was more of a med length until today?? |

maybe he just has allergies? what type of shampoo do you use on him? Do you use conditioner as well and then make sure you rinse really well to get all the product off his coat? sometimes shampoo/conditioner that is accidentally left on can irritate the skin. Is the skin just pink in color or does it appear to be prickly with red dots, scabby, flaky, or greasy? Also a dogs temperature runs hotter then ours so when you touch sometimes they appear to be warm when in fact its just their normal body temp. humans are 98.6 and dogs tend to run 100-102.5.

| He does have a little house that he can go in to... unless his brother is being a meanie and not letting him in. I've been using a flea and tick shampoo, and I do put conditoner on him. I hope I am getting it all off. It could be allergies... Im not sure? His skin just looks pink, the only time it scabs is if he is biting one spot a lot, and even then when I notice that I spray a hot spot releif spray to help it heal/not bother so much..... Have you ever noticed an instant reaction leg/nerve reflex? Even if I am just petting him it happens, like he can't help it.?? |

I'd stop using the flea and tick shampoo, especially since you just put on advantix. flea and tick shampoo can be harsh on their skin and shouldn't be used regularly because of the pesticides in it. I like espree products. They have a few shampoos that might be helpful and i think they sell them in Petco now. I like the aloe and oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. also if you want a non-pesticide shampoo they have two types. check out Espree Animal Products - Pet and Horse Care Products you can Live With... | I gave him a bath this morning, cause when I woke up this morning to check on him he chewed his behind so now its red and raw. I thought maybe there was a flea that I just couldnt find but I didnt find any in the water. I sprayed some hot spot relief on the sore spots, and i noticed he's kind of chewing a little on the inner leg and at the base of his penis and balls. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if you have an e-collar i recommend putting it on him to stop him from chewing on himself. he's just going to make the problems worse. Did your vet do a skin scrape to see if there are any parasites or bacteria present? if not, i think you might want to ask about it now that he is chewing on himself.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | What kind of shampoo are you using for fleas - if it's something cheap and store bought this could be irritating his skin and also - if it's hartz or one of those products - they can be very toxic to small animals - there's alot of info on products if you google them - I'd type in what you're using and read what others have said about that particular product since you didn't mention it it's just a thought and something you can rule out or in should you decide to research the product |
