| Food and Diet for your loved ones Can somebody please explain why we all provide our little ones the absolute best foods/things that we can afford. I mean we have food analyis spreadsheets that detail the primary ingredients in different brand foods, some provide them a raw diet, or even cook for them. To follow that thread we even buy the best shampoos and conditioners out there...basically we all ensure they are just well taken care of. I have not problems with that. I am one of them that just want the best for them.... But why does that same philosophy NOT follow with the way we treat ourselves or our own skin kids. I know there are some parents that spoil their dogs that are not providing the same qualities for their own KIDS. If you buy hollistic dog food, why are you not providing yourself and your kids the same high quality diet. You would never feed your dog WalMart brand food, but at the same time you would go to McDonalds a few times a month for yourself. Funny how we just want the best for our dog but somehow we don't stay consistent with ourselves and even our kids. Last edited by mileydog; 06-24-2010 at 08:55 AM. |

| You are so right, I do treat my little ones better than i treat myself (no kids). I think for me the reason is they are unable to tell us if something is wrong and i guess I just want to minimize all the things that can go wrong. One way of doing that is making sure they have the proper diet. Also Brandi came from a byb so she is not in the best of health (not anything major) so I am constantly watching her behavior to spot any signs of distress. But recently I have began to take steps to take better care of myself by quitting smoking and cutting down on salt. Heck I am now eating 3 times a day as oppose to the once a day I was eating. If I don't take care of myself first, i won't be able to take care of my little ones. That is what i started telling myself when I get the urge to smoke. |

| That puzzles me and I guess it never occurred to me that someone wouldn't treat their children as well as they treat their dog. Our puppy is 10.5 weeks old and eating TOTW. My children are in preschool and first grade and eat organic freshly prepared food. Neither child has EVER had fast food and they're happy well-adjusted children despite being "deprived" of McDonalds.

| This is SOO true! Makes me mad when I see people giving their children McDonalds everyday...haha after having this puppy and seeing how paranoid I am about every little thing I just KNOW I'm going to be an over-obsessed parent! |

| I agree with you.. We all should be taking care of ourselves as well as our pets.. but you can never forget that we are a lot different from our furbabies. I would love to make me a wholesome breakfast but I have to wake up at 4am to be ready for work at 6am. I would love to learn to make organic foods but sometimes I just don't have time. I like to splurge now and then because I'm human. I like my cake, thai food, pizza, ice cream.. It's just hard to buy a healthy meal for me.. If I could go to the store and buy a 40 lb bag.. that would be awesome. lol Yorkies have it pretty nice.

Yes, it's much easier to open a bag and put the food in a bowl for them. I do try to get really good food for my furbutts. But with 2 skin kids and ball games, practices, my school, their school, work, etc, it's not quite as easy to always make wonderful choices with ourselves. Not because I don't love my skin kids more than anything in this world, it's just that life doesn't always allow for homecooked organic meals. ( Not to mention my poor kids has a HORRIBLE cook for a mother. )

Also, our kids are soooo much more forgiving than our furbutts who simply turn their noses up to anything less than the best

| This is a good point and I never really thought about it. I just recently started taking better care of myself, but the minute I pick up dog food... I'm reading the ingredients. I have to admit that i don't pay anywhere near as much attention to what my kids eat.

People say they are too busy with baseball practice and homework so they just settle for a meal at McDonalds...that IMO is a lame excuse...yes we are all busy with homework and practice..i agree with that. But I don't see you analyzing the French Fries at McDonalds and stating that the primary ingredients used a fast food joints are far inferior to products made at home. You simply just take your kids there. For the same amount of time, one could easily buy products at Whole Foods or Trader Joes that sell organic heathier snacks that are comparable to Dorritos or other unhealthy snack items. My point is that we spend so much effort to keep our pets healthy but sometimes forget that we ourselves need to focus on our human health as well. I am not saying to never eat birthday cake or the occasional ice cream sundae...we do give our dogs treats too, remember..but we also feed dog treats in moderation. I am just saying to spend some time to realize that our diet is just as important as our furbabies. | |

| I try to buy the best food for my two puppies, kitties and bunnies. Cost is not an issue.... ever. I only want the best for them. I check the ingredients before trying anything new. I prefer more natural ingredients and NO By Products. |

| I agree--kids (and us) should pay just as much attention to what we're eating. I don't have kids, so Jackson is like a child to me, but I think it's terrible how children are fed today. To me, feeding a dog Pedigree every day is equivalent to feeding a kid MickeyD's every day. I will give Jackson junky canned food on occasion (such as Cesar's wet) but it's not an every day thing, so to me, it's liking giving him a snack of junk food treat. I've started a diet but I still treat myself every once in a while to a soda or two a week, and a restaurant a week. I am definitely not a nutritious person but I have been learning to eat healthier and how to read labels. My dogs life span is also a whole heck of a lot shorter than mine so I'd really love him to live as long as he can and give him the best he can get.

| I used to go on a rabbit forum where many of the members suffer from anxiety, stress and more severe mental health issues including a lot of depression. These people made sure that their rabbits got the very best diet possible and ensured that every aspect of their lives were as good as they could make them (which is only right and proper), yet they didn't take anywhere near the same amount of care of themselves! Very few of us eat the perfect diet, mainly because there are too many nice things out there to lead us astray, but also because everyone needs slightly different things and different times. And although all these people knew exactly how important their pets' diets were to their mental and physical well being, they didn't seem to grasp that many of their own problems could be easily solved by changing their diet. Eating properly can really make huge differences in how you feel - physically, emotionally and mentally. And I'm just as guilty of not taking care of myself as well as I should have, but I'm lucky as I'm not affected by health issues - so far.
