| I didn't start with special needs kids? I have 4 dogs. Two 3 year old girls. (A KC Cavalier and a Coton de tulear). I have 2 yorkies one is a year the other is 2. The 2 year old yorkie had to have LP surgery on his rt hip and really needs it on his left. The coton has been diagnosed with allergies and this week my KC cavalier was diagnosed with grade 3 heart murmur. The one year old yorkie is the only healthy one in the group and that's because of YT. If only I had been a member of YT I would have known how to choose my breeders and would have had 4 heathy dogs instead of only one. I love them all and would never trade them but it would have been less heartbreaking if I had spent more time investigating. It pays to do lots of checking before you think about purchasing a pet. I am overwhelmed and depressed. If only I were a member of YT 4 years ago. |

| So sorry that you're going thru all this. I'm a special needs nurse and i often get questions from parents of "why me?" I always respond with "God picks only the very special parents to care for his little angels". Your little ones are lucky to have you in their life. P.S my friend has a coton de tulear....very pretty dog!!

| I'm sorry you have to go through all of this, it is hard. You live and you learn, it's part of life. I have learned so much from purchasing my first yorkie to my most recent one and if I knew then what I know now things would have turned out much differently. Your furbabies are lucky to have you loving and caring for them!! Oh and a heart murmur or heart problems is very very common in cavaliers. I once read that all cavaliers will end up with a heart murmur or heart problem, it is the breed's problem. I've wanted a cavalier for years but after doing the research and finding this out I decided not to as I couldn't handle it.

| I hope many people read your post. People just don't realize how important it is to carefully research your breeder before buying a purebred dog. Too many people go for "bargain" puppies and end up with huge vet bills over their lifetime. I can't imagine what your vet bills are and will be for many years. I only have Lady (poorly bred rescue) whose "genetic time bombs" didn't start going off until she was 5 years old. I spend about $5,000 a year on medications, diabetic supplies and routine vet visits to monitor her health issues. I usually have one unplanned health emergency a year which runs another $1,000. That figure doesn't even include all her supplements, homecooked food, flea and heartworm meds, etc! I can't imagine how you afford four with special needs! |

You are not alone I did not do my homework either and 2 out of my 3 have issues. One alot of issues too. She has atopic dermatitis, hypothyroid, mvd and luxating patella4. It seems like everytime i take her to vet they find something more wrong with her but she is happy and my most playful pup so I know she has a good life. I get her the best specialists and try to give her the best life I can. She is 6 now. Last night our smoke detectors went nuts and she started limping so I am stressed YET AGAIN. I just have realized she is going to be a constant challenge sadly. My other yorkie almost died of pancreatitis and has ibd and has done well for 4 years. Once you get them balanced it is much easier. I know it is hard but there is a reason you have them You can learn and you can help others which is what I try to do so others do not make the same mistakes. Even if you try to find the best breeder out there sometimes things just happen just like in humans there are no guarantees when it comes to health. This is why after dealing with all this for the past 6 years I chose not to have skin kids as I know my limitations and this has been very hard on me. I work full time and try to take care of them the best I can while helping others along the way. Hang in there and the best advice I can give is yahoogroups for specific illnesses as those people know what you are going through with that particular illness and are a great means of support as they have helped me alot as well as here on YT. I think the most hurtful things I have encountered in dealing with all this are the people who have never dealt with this saying mean things as if I wanted sick dogs and wanted to learn all this stuff. I never did just was dealt this hand and doing the best I can with it day by day. I wanted healthy dogs too but for some reason it was not in the cards and I was meant to learn and share what I have gone through with others such as yourself Just know you are not alone Last edited by dwerten; 06-11-2010 at 12:15 PM. | |

| Can't imagine four with special needs. Mine has liver, pancreas, and intestinal problems along with allergies, hair loss, mild LP, and periodontal disease (controlled now). Thankfully now of it has put her in a serious siuation, it's just a lot to think about all the time!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I hear ya! I have 4. I thought Pixie was my healthiest until she couldn't walk the other day. Trip to ER shows LP. Knee won't stay in socket. Praying surgery will not be needed, but doubt it. Cali has MVD, IB, Allergies Grade 4 LP in both legs. Nikki is 15 so who knows what could happen. Roxie ok for now. Of course I buy insurance on them and everything they come down with is excluded. Oh well, we love them to pieces.

| It sounds like your doing such a wonderful job with your fur-kids, and I'm sure they are very happy and loved. It's wonderful that they found you, otherwise who knows what horrible fate would befall them. Give them lots of hugs and don't feel sorry that you didn't get a perfect dog. I got my Zada, and Azrael from someone who shows them and is a highly respected breeder, but Zada had LP in BOTH knees and had surgery, and Azrael has grade 3 in both knees, but so far she's in no pain. No breeder can be positive their pups will be ok.
