| sooo frustrated... Ever since I got Chloe, something hasnt been quite right... she pees ALOT and often it is very dilute, she also frequently pees in her sleep. Her specific gravity is very low usually, close to water but it has on rare occasions been normal... the vet was thinking Diabetes Insipidus but then when a urine sample came back concentrated thought probably not. Her kidney levels always come back perfect, ultrasounds of kidneys are always normal, no signs of infections, addisons ruled out. She does have MVD but this has never been linked together in any way. I am so frustrated because she has seen at least 4 different vets for this and we cant find any reason for it. I am seeing yet another specialist tomorrow but I really dont have any hope anymore when I go into these vets offices. Sorry just needed to vent...

| Has vaginitis been ruled out? Highly doubt it's the problem, but when Ellie had excessive or odd urination, her internist thought we should check. B/c it required anesthesia to swab down there, I elected to do a trial of Flagyl instead. It was not the problem for her... Does make me think about DI, but does she drink excessively? Incontinence? Although that wouldn't account for too much urine... Urine problems are really frustrating. I'm guessing it has been cultured, right? Ultrasound ruled out stones?

| Does make me think about DI, but does she drink excessively? Sometimes yes, sometimes no... there are times she just sits and drinks forever and other days where I dont notice her drink much at all. Incontinence? Although that wouldn't account for too much urine... The peeing in her sleep was called "overflow incontinence" by one vet, basically her bladder is so full it just starts coming out but like you said that doesnt account for WHY there is so much in there... this is likely the cause of peeing in her sleep though because if it was ectopic ureter or something like that it would happen almost every time she laid down (from what I have been told/ researched) Urine problems are really frustrating. tell me about it I'm guessing it has been cultured, right? Yes, it has been cultured sent out many times, as recently as 3 weeks ago and there is never a sign of any infection. Ultrasound ruled out stones? yes.

| If they can't find anything else, have they talked about actually testing for DI?

| yes, they have talked about either doing a water deprivation test or doing a trial with the replacement hormone... dont know which option sounds better... this is one of things I am going to discuss with the specialist tomorrow.

| not sure if this might even remotely be a possibility but my maggie has a problem with peeing in her sleep. The vets are saying that she may have this issue due to her being spayed early. She is very good at pottying on pad and outside...it just that she sleeps so soundly and she wets herself. I"m jsut starting her on a med that is supposed to help with it. The vet says that more than likely she will have to be on it for life while there have been cases that a dog has been able to go off of it. Good luck in finding out what is going on.

| We saw the specialist the other day. She believes that there are two separate things going on. 1. Chloe drinks more then normal (likely because of the liver issues) causing the more dilute urine. 2. She has a sphincter issue (weak bladder muscle) so that when her bladder is already full (from over drinking) and she is very relaxed, the muscle relaxes so much that the urine comes out. She (and I) dont believe in limiting access to water, so we are just left to deal with the increased uring. She decided to try her on a trial of Proin a drug to help with the sphincter issue... she said this will allow us to see if that is the issue, if it is I cant decide what I want to do from there... either keep her on the meds, or more then likely take her off of them and deal with the peeing in bed but at least no what it is from. So far we are at 2 days on the meds, and 2 totally dry nights which is kind of unheard of here.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Just saw this thread. I'm sorry Chloe has urination problems. it is very frustrating to deal with. I was going to suggest incontinence as well due to weak bladder muscles. I'm glad the Proin is working for her. I've heard its a very safe drug with very little side effects and dogs can be on it for life with no issues. I do have a question about the urinating during the day though. Is she literally squatting a lot throughout the day or are you finding random spots and never actually see her do it?

She squats... she never ever has accidents during the day, she is pad trained, so she goes to the pad every time and squats and pees... the only time she has "accidents" is in the middle of the night while she is sleeping, and I know she isnt waking up because she has literally been asleep on top of me and all of a sudden I am soaking wet and she is still peacefully sleeping

i know how you feel about long term meds with Chloe having MVD. morgan has the same problem but so far hasn't had any other serious medical problems. There is a bed made for incontinent dogs called the sleepee time bed i think. and it looks like something you can buy and make yourself for a cheaper price. but she wouldn't be able to sleep on you anymore. you might be able to use the idea of it and design something that could be placed on the bed so she could still sleep with you, just not on you.
