| Hair issues I posted a few weeks ago about Molly's hair loss or lack of hair on her hind legs. I took her for blood work last week and got results yesterday. All is FINE with her levels. So, now I am back to square one because I was not given a reason to why her hair is looking like this. It is both back legs and pretty much the same amount on each leg. It really looks like its been shaved but has not been!! Please let me know what you think could be the reason for this and what my next step should be. I am going to call another vet today for a second opinion. Thanks for your help.

| Hmm..it could be fleas..I've noticed thats where they like to bite Lucy. I also have a dachshund that is allergic to fleas and her skin gets really irritated wherever they bite her and sometimes causes her to lose her hair in those areas. |

| Thanks for the reply....Molly is 8 months old. She goes outside to use the bathroom, yes, in the grass! I don't know if she has allergies, we haven't had any tests done for that. This is so frustrating. I am calling my vet in a few minutes to discuss the next step. If she has nothing better to tell me then I will get a second opinion.

Does she bite at her legs and chew on them like corn on the cob as that is what allergy dogs do there are also red leg yorkies where they do not grow much hair on their legs but her coloring does not look to be that though. If blood work and everything ok then it is not something that is really a big concern health wise more so cosmetic Last edited by dwerten; 05-28-2010 at 05:30 AM.

| She does not bite on herself...and the short hair/hair loss goes up towards her hip area. She sleeps in bed with me and I've noticed that she is also shedding. I didn't think they were supposed to do that. My groomer suggested that we shave her with a #3 and let the hair grow out. It just bothers me b/c the hair was not like this until around Feb. I also read on your previous posts that you use Blue hypoallergenic shampoo so I am going to get a bottle of that today. The groomer also had me change her diet...we are now using BilJac (chicken & yam) and she seems to be doing fine with that. Yesterday the vet told me to give her a Fish Oil tab every other day to help improve her skin coat. Thanks again for your suggestions...keep them coming!

Have you seen fleas on her? what shampoo are you using now? I really do not think that is a great food though there are some great threads on foods people like. I would check it out as diet is key but she is only losing hair on her legs and diet would affect all over hair coat They did thyroid 6 panel? My dd lost hair on neck and text book is lumbar region (back) and tail for thyroid but dd did not read the text book again

| Poor Molly! I hope you find out what is causing this soon. Is her hair thin? I have a friend who's yorkie has thin hair. She's trying to grow it out but it breaks after a certain length. But then that wouldn't make sense right? Molly would have short hair everywhere. Sorry, just thinking out loud.

| Her hair is "full" everywhere else but she is shedding alot right now also. I'm thinking of just getting her a short haircut and see what happens. I will switch her food again and get the hypoallergenic shampoo. I really appreciate all of your input.

If i were to choose a food as i have looked into it alot i would do THE HONEST KITCHEN as it is the closest to home cooking. I would do the preference and rotate proteins like cod, chicken, venison, etc in a healthy dog. Some dogs do not like it but it is the food i feel the most comfortable switching too after reading as much as i can on it. In yorkies you do not want to do high protein foods as many have compromised livers so best to stay around 22% protein. Also with yorkies you want to keep them low in fat too and some foods like evo are too high in fat and i have seen dogs get fatty deposits in their eye on that food as it is too high in fat. | Update: Hair Loss Update on Molly....we had our vet apt. today and she gave Molly a 3 week dose of antibiotics & Aller G-3 Omega tabs to take daily. She didn't find any sores, bites, etc. to pass blame on so we are going to "think" that it is acute dermatitis for now. I also bought a bag of Royal Canine for Yorkies 29 & changed her shampoo to Tropiclean. I will keep you all posted on her hair condition as the weeks go by. Thanks for all of your suggestions and comments!!
