YT Addict | How long does your Yorkie sleep? Jenna is our 2-3 yer old Yorkie that we rescued a month ago. The whole time she's been with us, it seems all she does is sleep. She'll go the whole night through (12 hours) and then naps most of the day as well. The only time she's really up and moving is during her walks (about 4 or more per day) and when she's madly running about greeting family members or eating. She seems to tire quickly of playing and will only wrestle with a toy for a few minutes before crawling under her blanket to nod off again. Normal? Should I be worried? Perhaps she's older than we think? |

| Kaji's almost two and sleeps A LOT. He's just a calm mellow guy who knows when and where to show his energetic side. Typical day goes like this: He's asleep by 9 pm. We wake up 4:30-5 am to go potty, feed my little guy and play. Around 6-6:30 it's back to bed. He's up again at 9 or 10, but lays around doing not much of anything. Around 11 we're playing fetch and doing trick training. Then a quiet afternoon. One more vigorous play time around 6. Then it's back to sleep at 9. I wish we lived somewhere where I could walk him, but my area sucks! When I do take him out, he doesn't get tired! I run with him and I tire before he does.

YT Addict | Well I live in Alaska and we have lots of room here, but she really doesn't do all that much walking either. I'm guessing she's going to miss what little she does do come wintertime, but it's kind of distressing how tired she seems to be all the time. Although she will get up and follow me if she thinks I am going somewhere. Very clingy. It's rare that I can actually let her sleep somewhere and have her not spring up when she suddenly realizes I am not nearby. So perhaps she's just catnapping? There aren't any illnesses that Yorkies are prone to that would make them sleep too much then? I don't mind if she's a quiet girl, but I do want to be sure she's healthy. She did get a clean bill from her vet just about two and a half weeks ago, when she had her dental. But I'm not sure my vet sees that many Yorkies. Maybe I'm not feeding her enough? Don't want to overdo and make her fat though...especially with what little exercise she gives herself. ^_^ She also doesn't drink a lot of water...maybe she's dehydrated? |

| These are all good questions you should ask your vet. Where did you rescue her from? If she's a little girl with an unknown past, it could be that she's just not ready to open up to you. Kaji is shy and easily frightened, that's just his nature, and he was just very slow to open up. He would look at me like I was crazy when he first came home and I proudly offered him a toy. She could very well still be adjusting. She has yet to accept her new home, and you are the only pack she knows. She'll follow you because your familiar, but isn't active quite yet because she's unsure. That's how Kaji was. He would follow me and whine and cry like crazy if at any given moment he couldn't see me. Slowly, he opened up and played with me a little, just with me though and no toys. He now is ok with toys and he enjoys playing with his dog friends too! He had always liked dogs, but didn't want to play with them. Give your vet a phone call and ask for their opinion. If there is nothing medical going on, then it could be her adjusting. I don't know of any yorkie medical condition that could make them quieter than most.

YT Addict | She's actually been socialized quite well and is very obedient (well, until someone walks by with something she thinks she can mooch with those 'puppy dog eyes') and I'd say she's wormed her way into my schedule pretty well. In fact, I'd have to say she already runs the house to the beat of her own drum! 0_o She was supposedly the pet of a woman who ran a rescue nearby where I live. But when we went to look at her, she was being kept in the woman's truck, supposedly because she was fighting with another dog in the house who was old and infirm. (This woman still got $500 out of us for her, when other dogs in the rescue were going for only $100...she claimed it was 'her baby' that had to go to a good home or be returned within 2 weeks.) She was meant to be my daughter's dog, but she's seen me as alpha wolf I guess. She now sleeps under the bedcovers on my bed, expects 'walkies' first thing when I get up, all meals are meant to be served by me (unless 'Daddy' has something nommy) and she loves laps of course! If you're sitting down, she's in your lap in a thrice. Hm...sounds more like SHE'S the alpha wolf...erm...right? 0_o Kind of odd for me, I am only a few months out from losing my aged MacKenzie River Husky after having him (and his children-who have also passed) for 14 years. (kidney failure) I love big dogs, so it's taking me quite some time to get used to this little beanie baby. ^_^ She's definitely imprinted on me though. Hates if I leave her for any period of time, loves to travel in the car and gets all frantic if she can't go into the store with me. (She stays with either my hubby or my daughter if I can't take her in somewhere.) As long as she is a healthy dog, I won't worry about the snoozing. Just wondered if anyone else has a Yorkshire that they would have named Rip Van Winkle if they could! ^_^ Your Kaji sounds like quite the charmer! I love his name, does it have a particular meaning? |

| I think Kaji has earned the title Rip Van Winkle. My dad says he's not a dog, but a Build a Bear doll. If I'm not home, he's sleeping on something of mine, shoes, sweater, jumps on top of my desk somehow, you get the picture. What I was referring to isn't a socialization thing. Kaji has always loved other dogs and animals, it's about the only thing he isn't afraid of. He gets really excited when he sees a German Shepherd. (I think he thinks he's one of them ) That's been my experience anyway. Kaji's my first dog, ever. Other than him, I've only known the shelter dogs I volunteer my time for. Kaji's name has no meaning. I looked it up and nada. The only thing that comes up is Ryoji Kaji, a character of an anime I watched and where I got the name, and a Japanese actress. I just wanted to give him a unique name. What's funny is that the character is a real ladies man, a charm your pants off kind of guy. Kaji's been given the nickname the yorkie "Casanova." Who knew he'd live up to his name so well?

| My Teddy dog sleeps most of the time except when eating or chasing birds in the garden or out walking which he can't do much now as he is getting on in years. I think it is natural that dogs sleep when not doing something. What else would they do? Read a book? Watch TV? or surf the net? |

| This was a reassuring thread to read! Our little girl just turned 1 & sleeps a lot too! Her most active time is between 5-7 pm. I too don't mind her being a snuggler as long as she is healthy! |

| Some days Tibbe sleeps about 14 - 16 hours, some days way more, especially if it is raining. But his busiest day he only sleeps at night. Those are few and far between.

YT 2000 Club Member | Our three, who are 10 years, 4 years and 11 months, are playing most of the day. They settle down for about a two hour nap in the afternoon around one and by 8:30 pm they are dead to the world and they don't wake up until six in the morning.

| To the OP, I would be tired too if I went for several walks per day. LOL Mine sleeps a lot as well but then again, she's only 12 weeks old. LOL

| I found this really nice website on sleeping dogs lol. I think I remember reading somewhere that dogs need like, 18 hours of sleep or something. I know my little butt-butt sleeps whenever he can be near me. I find it so adorable, but he gets startled out of his sleep easily and he get's snippy. Or he'll go all guard dog when he's sleeping and hears another dog on tv or something! Why do dogs sleep so much? |

| LOL, 18 hours, I believe it but for Princess Sophie it really depends on the day/night. She has had some days when we wonder if she'll sleep at all at night cause she's been sleeping almost all day. LOL Then there are nights, when we wonder if she'll sleep at all. We think that when she's sleeping a lot during the day she's probably having a growth spurt cause she eats like a little piggy all the time! LOL That's our Sophie, princess by name only!! I think she's really a tom boy!!
