| OMG is that a WORM??? when I was pouring my Maddie's water dish out last night, I saw something in the water. upon closer inspection, it looked like a WORM!!! got the magnifying glass, but even with my bifocals couldn't see well enough to be sure. I put it with a little of the water in a plastic water bottle. took it to my vet's office this a.m. vet thought it "looked like it could be a hookworm". I also had taken with me her morning poop deposit. they ran a fecal and said no sign of worms but are writing a prescription for a wormer anyway. she was just at the vet last month for yearly check-up and also had a dental cleaning last month. fecal last month was clear also. I asked the vet tech how the worm could have gotten in her water. her dish is run in the dishwasher every night. the tech thought possibly she had licked her bum and the worm was in her facial hair and then got in her water I am so grossed out I don't know what to do. I have never seen her lick her bum --- yes, her other "area" but not the bum. does anyone have any ideas??? thanks |

| I don't know how it got there, but Heartgard Plus given once a month will prevent them. Heartgard Plus Heartguard: Heartworm Prevention For Dogs - 1800PetMeds

| she takes Sentinel every month... but now, let me add the rest of the story!! this a.m. when I took the "worm" in, the tech took it to the back and came back and said the vet said it "looked like a hookworm". "worm" was still in the water bottle I had brought it in. she asked if I wanted it back, when I said no, she threw it away. when I went to the clinic to pick up the de-wormer, the main (owner) vet was luckily in the outer room. I asked him if I could talk to him a minute, told him what happened and asked the receptionist to get the water bottle from the trash can. it was still there. he took it and said he would look at it through a microscope. I assumed that's what the vet did this a.m.!!!! he called me into an exam room and said it was some sort of fiber, that looking at it with a microscope he couldn't find any kind of g i tract or anything he would expect in a parasite. he pulled it apart with tweezers and said it was very tough, as well. so, long story shorter, had I listened to the young vet the tech talked to this a.m., I would have given my Maddie de-wormer for a piece of fiber in her water! this is very well renown vet clinic, even though we are in a rural area. I am very disappointed the vet this a.m. didn't even take the time to check this out. I was upset when I left, but will visit again with the "head" vet to let him know the whole story and how I feel. I don't know if giving her a de-wormer when she doesn't need it would hurt her or not, but don't believe in giving her something if she doesn't need it. |

| Wow...how hard was that to just take a peek in the microscope to be sure...grrr! Well, thank goodness you thought to double check!

| What a bitter sweet story. I'm curious about the "head" vet's reaction to your story and your feelings about what occurred.

| I don't blame you for being upset and I probably would have said something to him immediately when he told you that it was a piece of fiber. That is just horrible! No on a humorous note...when the vet tech asked you if you wanted the "worm" back did she think you wanted to keep it as a souvenir or a new pet? I just had a visual of a worm on a leash

On another note, I guess it just goes to show I have to be more assertive when it comes to my baby. I should have asked if the first vet looked at it through a microscope... guess I shouldn't have just assumed he did. I'm not a vet, but I just thought for sure that's what he would do!

| I would be furious! One of the first things they should have done IMO is to look at her chart to see if she was getting a heartworm preventative. Sentinel kills hookworms. It is very scary that they prescribed medication for her without checking her chart. The receptionist at my vet's office just called in the wrong prescription for Lady a few weeks ago. I asked for Phenobarbital and got Diazepam (Valium). Both are controlled substances. An inexcusable and potentially dangerous mistake. |

I just want to add that I am so glad to have found Yorkie Talk. My Maddie is my first indoor dog. I grew up on a farm where dogs were run over and replaced with the next stray or puppy dumped on a rural farm road. My dad gave the dog rabies shots but no $$$ was spent on "dogs", only the "real" farm livestock. I have learned so much reading this forum. So many of you are so helpful without being judgemental of us "dummies". My husband gave me my Maddie as a surprise and then died suddenly 8 months later at the age of 47, so as you can imagine I would do anything I can to ensure her health and well being. This makes me so mad my trusted vet clinic would just prescribe a medication without making sure it was needed. Would adding another de-wormer done her any harm if she didn't need it?

| This is their website: Novartis :: Sentinel Flavor Tabs :: Intestinal Parasites I would speak to the owner/vet or office manager and make sure they are aware of the seriousness of what happened. Vets are responsible for the actions of all their employees, vet techs and receptionists. It is their license on the line. I am sure the vets would appreciate knowing what happened. |

That's why we aren't allowed to do any refills for prescriptions. The RVT and the tech assistants are the only ones besides vets that can refill meds. We just transfer calls

I also was wondering why the heck someone would ask a patient if they wanted a worm as a keepsake - maybe it was for a 2nd opinion ? That's the only thing that would make sense and people do that sometimes...... on the other hand you could have had a little Pet Fiber to show to your friends yuk on worms and a hex on fleas -
