| ShyAnne has a "blackhead"! ShyAnne has a little bump, in her left shoulder area, that looks exactly like a human's blackhead. When I gently scraped at the top of it, some of it came off. I didn't want to scrape at it anymore than that b/c just that little bit caused the area around the bump to turn red! I did a search in this forum for "blackheads" and read a few different things. Are these "blackheads" common for Yorkies? If so, do they come out just like for us humans? Sheesh! Are they anything to be worried about? Thanks for any help!

| Is there any chance it could be a tick and not a blackhead? |

| Maximo: Thanks for the reply! That was my 1st thot (tick!) b/c DH has been working where the ticks were more than plentiful. Since my furbabies don't have anywhere they play or walk that they could get a tick from, I thot maybe DH had dropped one on the couch or something. But, I Google searched ticks b/c I needed to be reminded of what they looked like and this is definitely not a tick. It really is exactly like a human's blackhead! DH informed me tonite that he noticed that little bump on ShyAnne quite awhile ago - long before tick season here. Of course, I gave him what-for b/c he didn't tell me. I will check with their groomer tom morning and see if she has noticed it or has any idea about what to do. I posted here first b/c I trust my YT friends the most! Maybe someone else will reply, too. Thanks again.

| Barbara: My oldest boy had a tiny bump on top of his head when he was 6 months old. The vet said it could be a pimple or a cyst. She offered to scrape it while he was under anesthesia to be neutered. I dabbed a little olive oil on it and it disappeared in 2 days, before surgery. I'm not quite sure what to do for a blackhead other than a warm compress. In addition to talking to your groomer, perhaps give your vet's office a call for some ideas. They should be willing to do that over the phone. Glad to know it's not a tick. I had one come out of my hair in the shower the other day after I worked in the garden. Yuck! |

| Lana has had something like you described recently. We did the same google search not exactly knowing what they were. What we had determined them being was a mosquito bite with a little scab on top. We scraped, squeezed and with no avail we watched and she itched them a bit. It is really starting to heat up here in AZ so mosquitoes are becoming almost common on our walks. It took about a week for them to loosen and then the dumb scab would get stuck in her hair which took a bit longer to get out. |

| GOT THE ANSWER! My vet told me what to do for dog's blackheads - apparently this is not as rare as I thot. Make a solution of very warm water and epson salts. (Warm enuf that the salts melt.) Usually it is 1 Tbsp. of epson salts to 1 c. of water but for these little furbabies we only need to make 1/3 cup. Which is easy math: 1/3 c. of very warm water and 1 tsp. epson salts. Saturate a cotton ball with the solution and hold it over the blackhead for a few mins. Do this a few times in one sitting while the stuff is still good and warm. Dry the area and then dab the blackhead with polysporin. Try to do this twice a day and in a few days, the blackhead should work its way up and out. Talk about an easy and cheap way to deal with this! I am going to start ShyAnne's treatments tonite and I will let you know how it works out. Reminds me of bread/milk poultices of days gone by! LOL My Mom used to swear by those for slivers and everything else that irritated a person's skin or might cause infection. I can't figure out how I would wrap a poultice around my furbaby's body tho! Just some humor added for fun for those who think this is a yucky/gross topic.

| Hey all yorkie-lovers!! My yorkie also had a small sort of blackhead on her back for like one year or maybe more now. Is there any risk of infection etc, if i squeezed maybe part of the blackhead-black pimple? If anyone knows anything about it please let me know!! I`m becoming really concerned about it.. Thank you!! |
